Don't shoot your chronograph
OK, you can quit snickering now...
Just so I didn't accidentally shoot my Chrony, I bolted this heavy gauge steel to the board it is mounted on.
The angle should deflect even big lead globs 'up' so all I'd lose would be the posts and screens.
I realize only a total idiot would ever shoot THAT low as to hit the chronograph, but . . .
Someone embedded a .22LR in the plywood's edge just below the steel , so maybe it was a good precaution...

Doc - Ouch !
I've seen that done, but haven't shot mine yet. Don't feel too bad. Since I've resumed handloading I've been warned that there are two kinds of reloading shooters: those who've shot their chrony, and those who will. - DixieBoy

Re: Don't shoot your chronograph
I have shot my chrono with a gas check from a 25-20. It cost me $20 for a new led display. I now use heavy plexiglass in front of it so I can still read the numbers.-------------Sixgun

Re: Don't shoot your chronograph
How did you pull that off?
Re: Don't shoot your chronograph
One of the kids shot one of the sky screens on mine. Still works fine though. It whistles when the wind blows. 1886.
Re: Don't shoot your chronograph
My chronograph was recently assaulted in a very deadly way . It was my first one and it lasted about 6 months. New rules have been implemented to try and make the new one live to an older age.

Shot my Oehler early on. Fortunately, it was a .22 bullet that just caught the edge of the sky screen base and didn't affect the "eye". Actually, I just look at the direction the bullet bent the plastic and it helps remind me which end goes toward the target!

FWIW I understand Chrony has a very good program for "rebuilding" slightly used products.
I have never tested this claim myself.

Re: Don't shoot your chronograph
I used to have a Detonics Combat Master... Once, at the range, a fellow I barely knew wanted to shoot it across his Chrony to see what the velocity was out of its abreviated barrel. I warned him it shot quite low.
I warned him twice.
He didn't listen.

Now who said the desk was at the range. Always point the gun in a safe direction.

I so hard the neighbor yelled across the fence, she asked if I was ok.

Re: Don't shoot your chronograph
I found that 1/8" brazing rod makes good bulk replacement rods to hold the diffusers. White packing tape will repair the diffusers themselves, if you can find them. A 454 Cassull will put them up on the barn roof where it is darn hard to get them back.

Not only that, but they are hard to clean and not very tasty.
Re: Don't shoot your chronograph
After reading a similar post on diffusers being shot, and the wires actually damaging the chrony when shot, I built the rods out of wooden dowel rod, painted the ends to show the effective height where you are supposed to have the bullet pass over the screens so that we can line up the target more effectively in regards to height.

A 380 will penetrate 1" of the front of a wood desk and about 2 1/2" of birch chair leg at 1- 1 1/2" yds. Be careful how you clear a Walther PPKs and do it in a relatively safe direction.
BTW, no one will hear except your wife who jumps nearly out of her skin at the unexpected report.
Answering her follow ups is the challenge.
Home Depot carries very nice decorative bronze medallions to cover the well centered hole. "handirifle" never even noticed when he sat in front of it.

Re: Don't shoot your chronograph
Hello Riflemen-Ok, I have been pressured into spelling the goods here on the forum so here goes. I made a run up to Washington this year and went shooting with Tuby and another pal. We set up some targets and a Chrony and broke out about 20 different shootin irons. I think I was testing a new load out in my wife's 357 magnum when I blasted Tuby's Chrony Yes Sir, I don't have any idea what I did wrong when I took aim but at the sound of the crack Tuby's Chrony went every direction! Before this happened I did not know I was anywhere near this good of a handgun shot Life is good, BestLever
