Got my Large(r) Loop Lever finished

Post by deerwhacker444 »

I finally got a design finalized and made my lever out of a piece of 4120. Gents,..I don't care if I ever do another one.....Making this thing on a CNC Knee Mill took forever. Maybe if I had access to an EDM or Waterjet, but it will be a long while before I make another. Maybe if I was a machinist with some experience and knew what the H3LL I was doing, it might have been easier. Anyhow, I thought you might like to see the finished product.

Here is the progression from start to finish. When I started, I wasn't sure what I wanted. I'd seen pics of the one that John Wayne had on his 92 and I grew up watching re-runs of the Rifleman, so I went kinda grandiose on the first 2 tries, but I eventually came to my senses. I added the trigger stop, which I really like. It might not look original, but I bet there's not another one out there like it..

Here's a close up of the finished product in the white. Bluing will be next.

And here's what it looks like installed.

Not too bad for a self proclamed college educated idiot.

If anybody wants to try one, I can send them an IGS file of the finished part - less the file grooves that might be instrumental in making one themselves if they're so inclined.

Really nice on the final product. I'd think waterjet cutter for sure if you have to make a bunch. Did the trigger stop have to be filed to fit right? Just thinking that there might be enough variations in builds that it might be somethat that had to be fit per gun.

Very fine craftsmanship! That stainless lever looks great! I'm going to put a large loop lever on my 9422 Trapper and hope it looks at least half as good. It will be blue, though, as the Trapper is blued. I was lucky and got the last 2 Winchester 9422 large loop levers as a parts order.

You are very handy. Slightly off subject but have you considered polishing the hammer? I saw an 1894 CB with a polished hammer that looked really sharp. It might go well with that new lever. 1886.

Neat!

I see a great article in HOW you went about making the lever loop.

I bet I could have those made on my CNC if I had the file and there was interest in it. I will take you up on the offer for the file and any persons who would like one, let me know via PM and I will see how much interest there is and how little I can get these done for the amount I need to produce.

Very nice work! :D I bet that loop would be handy for hunting with gloves on. I could use something like that for my Marlin 336 (30-30).
I was wondering about the thickness of the steel stock used?
Have a CNC laser cutter here at work that cuts up to 1/4" thick steel, very handy.
I believe that if you could keep the thickness to 1/4" that this could be easily made on the laser with some mill or hand touch-up work.
If possible I would like to take you up on the file offer. Thanks.
Great project.

Great Job, I am impressed, the size looks perfect for gloves but not too large for general use.
