A Rifle to Palm

Post by Drawdown »

Really good article on "Sporting Classics Daily.com" by the title of this thread! By Wayne Van Zwoll, basically pointing to the +&-'s of a heavy Bolt Action versus the Levers most of us love. I'd already read it few weeks back, I get the magazine in the mail. Great magazine that's become my favorite! And this article verifies what we mostly done know? Seems every year I've got a 30-06 and now a 270Win, both scoped, but come time to hunt I usually grab my Mod 64 30-30! Exception of 2021, when I hunted a big woods where it required lotta walking to get too, but a great place to kill a big buck, so I lugged my 06 every hunt, chances of a longer shot very possible, even edges of a big strip mine reclaim. Never got a shot! And entire time I wanted my fistfull of Mod 64! After all, 99.9% if hunting time is spent packing the rifle, not aiming it!
I'll mention another great article I found sometime back I the Guns Magazine classuc back issues section. From the April 1962 issue, article about Ben Lily. The author knew and hunted there in New Mexico with apparently some of Lily's best friends, got to meet Lily, see him in the field on the track of a Lion. One thing that was new to me, was Lily using a Mod 99 Savage in 250-3000. Most everything I've read he only used either an 1886 in 33wcf or 1894 in 30-30, but there's been plenty of photos of Lily with a Savage, speculation written in 303Savage? But a good read!

I have always intended to stop at Ben's memorial on Highway 15 on the way from Silver City to the Gila Cliff Dwellings. I'll make a point of it this fall.

I sure know nothing of that area, but from reading the article, I take it the author got to meet him right there, near his Cliff Home. The friends if Lily, the ?Seouls? lived nearby. But everything about his story has always interested me so much!

My Winchester Model 88 in .308 is perfect for our large mule deer and a pleasure to hunt with. Loaded with my 165 grn handloads it's the best of both worlds.
