It seems to be making the rounds, again. Knew a Husky pilot that carried a .44 mag Blackhawk.

Cool photo! Were the services comfortable with soldiers carrying civilian in addition to military service weapons?

From my experience, it was an early version of don't ask don't tell. Commanders seemed to not see what they didn't want to see.
Flash forward to 2003 and I gave my kids the same advice my dad gave me. Find a handgun. Both did and both put them to use. Sad thing is they had to leave all of them behind. Apparently Iraqi officers loved fancified handguns.

In 1966 I was in the US Army and stationed at Ft. Rucker, Alabama. I had my Ruger .22 Single Six with me and went shooting whenever I could. When I shipped out to Korea it was too much of a hassle to take it with me so I sent it home. In Korea they gave me an M-14 and my fallback position if we were attacked was on an M2. There ain't no fun like shooting the big .50! I loved it.
