Speaking of Muddy Dogs
this guy left me behind in 2022, i review some of his antics from time to time. He loved water, but hated baths. He loved to run, and mud was his friend...
it's taken a couple of years to realize how much of my time he occupied. and how much he liked to make me laugh.
I bet there are some good photos sitting around, have time to share them?

Re: Speaking of Muddy Dogs
Great pictures, Grizz! He looks like a happy dog.
These two have been gone for a long time, but it's a rare day that I don't think about them.
Tasha, my Lab was my first dog. Very smart and incredibly strong. Just loved everyone.
Abbey was a stray I found wandering the streets around one our properties.
She was about 5 months old when I brought her home. Her first year she was
the most destructive animal I'd ever seen, but I refused to give up on her.
She ended up being the best friend I've ever had. She was a mix of Boxer,
Dane and a little Pitt and all of about 50 pounds, but had the heart of a lion.
She even put herself between me and a black bear. My .44 was out and ready to fire,
but the growling, snorting and barking changed the bear's mind. Tasha was right next to her,
but wasn't as viscous sounding as Abbey.
That little episode taught me to make sure I latched the darned cabin door!

Dixie was affectionately known as a Jellow lab, as soon as she walked through the door at the vets office she became like Jello. She probably put the Dr's kids through college!

I love dogs , after loosing my last one don't know if I can do it again. Over 17 years it's like loosing a family member .
Re: Speaking of Muddy Dogs
my daughter's dog, a shepherd/rotty mix she rescued from near death as a puppy, lives with us when she is working.
Ranger is on his last legs . . . his hip joint seems to be disintegrating, he has arthritis, he's on pain meds, but otherwise healthy. I hope I don't have to put him down, he is fragile, but happy. He has an OK nose,
But Chico had a fantastic nose. He could find where airgun pellets landed in the yard by scent, and the photo of him submerging is Chico retrieving a kong on the bottom, by smell.
It hurt so much to lose him that I bought a crippled 4Runner and rehabilitated it, to deal with myself. RunRun talks to me, but he can't read my mind, or make me laugh. Let's just keep this between us, OK? Like others, IDK if I can raise another one . . .
People bond with horses and mules and donkeys and sheep. Sheep? Whatever.
Interesting the bible is quiet about pets . . . dogs were used as hunters, shepherds, and guard dogs, but the pharisees called the people they scorned "dogs", an epithet among the unbelieving "leadership" . . . even though the greeks and romans highly esteemed their dogs . . . which doubtless fueled the mindless hatred evidenced by the sects in Jerusalem . . .
I love the photos, let's see some more, with or without mud, any Kind is welcome :)

Re: Speaking of Muddy Dogs
It was a painfully slow upload too!
Winnie, Parkers momma and Sage's grandma slept on her back as well. She also had what I can only explain as night terrors. Asleep on her back, legs would start flailing with whimpering, whining and then snarling and barking to the point where I'd rush downstairs thinking she was being torn apart and then THUMP ! as she fell off the couch.
Sage has picked up the torch from her grandma, she falls out of bed a few times a week... How she can fall off a queen size bed is beyond me.

Our Great Pyrenees just had the TPLO surgery in July. The money wasn't an issue even though it was $$$$. Getting 120# sedated coyote killer out of car that didn't want to get out was the painful part.GunnyMack wrote: ↑Sun Aug 18, 2024 7:47 am 20200305_105726.jpg

You must have had that done years ago. Current inflation cost was just under $7500, for the original surgery, but we were lucky enough to find a board certified Canine Orthopedic Surgeon. There were lots of ortho surgeons available, but we could only find 2 that were board certified. We did our research and found ZERO negative comments on his work or office. We got lucky.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

Re: Speaking of Muddy Dogs
Yes, it was spring of '19 or 20... my vet told me to use this Dr, said if it was his dog he would go to her. Having a 30 odd year relationship with my vet I took his word for it.
When I took Claro for the initial exam the Dr reassured me she had very good results, hardly ever needed to remove the plates. Well Murphy follows me and of course Claro had to have the revision to remove the plate and screws. This was during the height of covid for the second surgery. I told the vet tech that I wanted the hardware, her reply was ' oh yes we take these out all the time and give them to the owners' . It was then I felt someone wasn't completely honest with me. If I even need this for another dog I'm going elsewhere!

Re: Speaking of Muddy Dogs
Way back in probably the 80's, either Field & Stream or Outdoor Life had the back page where they did a single page story each month. One of which was titled
On the VIII day
It was about how God made doG, with help from an archangel they developed the Labrador.
I still have that issue, I need to scan it and post it here, I'm sure most would enjoy it!
I also have the historical recount of the Labrador breed, how it was brought into existence in Britain via Newfoundland where dogs were taught to help catch cod that got out of the nets as they were being beached. In Britain the breed was almost lost due to a kennel fire! Also Lab hair was used to stuff church pew cushions.
Don't care who ya are, dogs are heaven sent!

Not to step across the line of sacrilege, but I believe a dog's abundant joy and its ability to give unconditional love are reflections of the true character of the Creator. How many times has a dog's warm heart lifted my spirits? How many days are there on the calendar?

Re: Speaking of Muddy Dogs
Exactly Bill!
It's funny, on the occasion I meet someone who has a dog with them, walking, in stores whatever I always make eye contact with the pooch before the person. I'll remember the dogs name but not the persons!
I have a very soft spot for pit bulls, why I don't know, must be the ever present smile they have. But they don't fill the lifestyle needs I have( bird hunting) . But then again just about every breed has a soft spot to me.
Years ago we had just come back to the dock after fishing and I was going to my truck through the marina parking lot when I saw a lady walking her oversized dust mop, er I mean Puli. I said to her can I meet your Puli? She was stunned I knew the breed. Well I'm a DOG person ma'am, I know most of the breeds but I'm a Labrador nut.
A couple pats on the head and away I went.

Re: Speaking of Muddy Dogs
A certain knucklehead (Sage) just saw herself in a mirror, she set her hackles to high and started to growl then full on cujo barking! Not the first time with a mirror as I introduce my puppies to a mirror when they become aware of their surroundings. I gotta say that Sage is absolutely the highest energy pup I've ever had, she is always ON while the sun is shining!

Re: Speaking of Muddy Dogs
First 2 are my Grace - puppy pic and a pic 2 years later -- she still kind of looks like a puppy,

Little Bit (aka Tee Tee) - i inherited this goofball when a relative passed -- 7 lbs of ferocity

My Dixie Dog only lived 11 years -part boxer, part something else even larger - the vet surmised likely Rott -- she was a beautiful soul with a wonderfully gentle disposition - this is a puppy pic - she was likely 75-ish pounds as an adult

And Buttercup and April gearing up for a car ride - which i hope they're getting lots of while they wait for me in the hereafter

Buttercup was most definitely spoiled rotten

Honorable mention goes to some of the kitties ive had over the years -- Zoe and Sunny -- nothing better than a well behaved kitty for a nap companion -- They have been gone 2 and 3 years respectively -- have not found a replacement because , although i genuinely loved the critters --- litter boxes are a major PIA for me

Re: Speaking of Muddy Dogs
Hey Doug, what a great collection of friends! I like your Boxer Rotty cross, there's something about them. Daughter's dog Ranger is a German Shepherd/Rotty cross we think. They are an intentional breed now. I hope they don't get over bred. I'd like to see a little smaller version, but downsizing doesn't always improve the larger dogs. I can still get Ranger in and out of the car, but don't know for how long.Streetstar wrote: ↑Fri Aug 30, 2024 3:54 pm First 2 are my Grace - puppy pic and a pic 2 years later -- she still kind of looks like a puppy,
