Rare old Vaver sight

Post by marlinman93 »

The Vaver Sight Co. began in the 1920's building extremely accurate rear sights for all the best target rifles. In around the late 1920's Wittek bought Vaver and they continued building sights under the Wittek-Vaver Sight Co name until 1951.
These sights are wonderful click adjustable with elevation being a "safe dial" to raise and lower the sights. Extremely hard to find these days, and it wasn't until maybe a year ago I was offered one for a Stevens 44/44 1/2 single shot. Then at our gun show last weekend a friend brought one for a Winchester 52 to me and asked if I wanted to buy it also? Of course I was happy to add another to my collection of old sights! Maybe someday I'll find one for a gun I actually own, and I can put it on a gun!

OR
You just need to buy a 44 and a 52!
Yes the 'enable' button has been pushed!
Those I've never seen or heard of, look very well made.

I've owned a few of both, but honestly not a Stevens single shot fan so I wont be buying one.

Briefly owned a 52C with one installed.

The sight impressed me. That particular 52, not so much, as it didn't shoot anywhere as well as the best one I have had, which is still the last one standing after owning about a half dozen over the years.

Vall, you keep amazing me. Learn something nearly every time you post. Those look like amazing sights.

BTW, on a less enjoyable topic, did you hear our friend Hank Marquardt (Hangfire Hank) (aka Accurate Arms), has passed? I haven't found out when exactly, but my emails and phone calls have gone unanswered for over a year. We usually talked a couple times a year.

No, I hadn't heard he passed? Sad that he is gone, but sadder without anyone mentioning it.
I got a call today from a friend to tell me a lady we know whose allowed us to continue to shoot longrange at her late brother's property passed away this week. She lived alone, so nobody knew she passed, and a few people had been trying to call her with no answer. Her pastor finally answered the phone and gave us the sad news.

I saw my first one maybe 20 years ago, and began searching for one then. I got the Stevens 44/44.5 version from a friend who gave it to me because the upright was bent. Guessing someone dropped their gun, and bent it, but I locked it in my vise and with a little persuasion it straightened right back. That one even came with a copy of the original instructions sheet telling how they work.

I love it when a little thoughtful work can put something neat back into good working order. Very cool you got the original instructions too!

By the way, I've gotten that old Creedmoor rolling block shooting again. It is a 44-90 bottleneck. I formed brass from 45 Basic that I annealed, put a few wraps of tape around the base to center it in the chamber and fireformed. Not ideal but seems fine for BP loads. Next weekend I'm taking the owner and his son out to shoot for a while. I plan on bringing my Sharps, Trapdoor, Snider, and Peabody too so they get a little taste of other rifles from the period. I'll send along some photos after.
