Re: On a whim.....
Here the Green Sunfish is considered an invasive species and if anglers catch them they are expected to be killed on the spot.
Neat that you found that one in a ditch - going about it's daily life. Just goes to show mother nature finds a way!

Tenkara is a fun way to fish, Ray. Can't get much simpler. Fly fishing's answer to a willow pole, line, hook and cork.

A bluegill on any micro rod is a good time.
I'll admit I am a crappie and perch guy when I can get 'em.

OMG ... Tenkara. Now I have more stuff to research and spend money on. My wife is not going to be happy with you.

Re: On a whim.....
Shucks, I was tenkara fishing as a kid and didn't know it! All I had was a cane pole, length of line and a fly. Caught a lot of "exotic" fish that way, fish that would have sold for a lot of $$$ in the pet stores in the US, but we just used them for bait, chicken feed or tossed them back. And all the while I dreamed of fishing for trout with a REAL flyrod like I read about in Outdoor Life and Field and Stream... those were the days, my friend.

Even the commercial fishermen used the old stick & string for albacore tuna. A very effective system.

Prudent decision, Ray. I have heard cottonmouths have an attitude problem.

Re: On a whim.....
Cool, thanks for sharing. I target mainly Largemouth Bass, but I'll pretty much fish for anything once I know they are there. I catch sunfish and bluegill both on bass lures sometimes. I caught a warmouth earlier this year, which isn't super common to catch around here for some reason.

Re: On a whim.....
Leak fixed, ran 1 errand then got in the river!
Was given a 8ft6 bamboo 4wt fly rod. A Shakespeare 3 pc. Having never fished a bamboo rod before I really didn't know what to expect, now I know- what a joy to cast!
2nd cast a nice plump 14" rainbow couldn't resist and hung on long enough to net it. Next cast and a bigger rainbow fell for an olive wooly bugger.
I move upstream and got 2 more bows, had one break me off! Then another broke me off( gotta get rid of the Orvis tippet !)
Decided to go all the way upstream to our club boundary and fish back down. Lost a few more.
Sorry no pics, I couldn't get to my phone with my waders on... middle age spread maybe!?

Great job Will. I haven't cast a fly in trout water for about three years, highly unusual for me.

I love fishing small waters with light gear! Some of the most fun I have fishing. And I've caught fish up to 24" long in water you could easily jump across.

Re: On a whim.....
Back in the 90s I went up in the mountains of California on a fishing trip with my platoon sergeant. He assured me we were going after a rare fish that was only found in that region. After we caught our first I swore to him that I had seen that fish before but we didnt call it by the name he had mentioned. He asked what we called it in Texas, I replied, BAIT!

Re: On a whim.....
"micro fishing", eh? I learned to fish with about a maybe 10 foot length of 0.20" (zero vinte folks called it) nylon line and a tiny hook that could be hidden in a grain of rice. We'd go down to the stream below my uncle's house and catch "rabo de oro", "cará", "piába" and others that escape my memory. A 3 incher was HUGE and anything larger was rarely caught. I guess they saw the rice as maggots - or maybe they had some kind of weird fish diet to fall for plain white rice. We'd tie the hook on and not use any other weight, nor pole. Just a simple little handline was how we did it. One learned to lay that line out on the water surface and watch it for nibbles. What a thrill to see that line start to snake out, indicating something was actually carrying the bait!. Dad got a subscription to Field and Stream and I drank in the stories of fly fishing and dreamed of one day trying my hand at it. A half century later and it's still just a dream, haven't lived near fishable water in thirty years, unfortunately.

Re: On a whim.....
Yes, indeed. Shoal creek is where I've spent many an enjoyable hour - back in the 20th Century. Turkey Creek along the north property line of my Alma Mater is another place, although never used flies on either one. Did well with spinners, spoons and such. Bushwhacker Lake up north of there would be a nice place to fish, if one had a flotation device to get around in it. Electric or paddle only. Limitations on time and equipment while up there have kept me from doing much, despite obtaining a fishing license each trip north "just in case".Ray wrote: ↑Wed Jul 24, 2024 10:02 am
Pablo, there seems to be a fine stream called shoal creek in your northern neck of the woods....

Here's a pic I really like from a few years ago. Can't believe the kid's going to be 16 this year. Somehow we've never managed to get back out on the water with him.

I'm greatly enjoying this thread you started.

Re: On a whim.....
Way back it the last quarter of the 20th Century I managed to convince a young lady to be my bride. We tied the knot in the same town as both our parents did (many years prior, of course) and a friend loaned me his cabin up in Red Feather, Colorado. We tooled up there in my old 68 Fairlane fastback and had a week to fish the area. I'd saved up and bought a few flies and floats and had a couple of fishpoles, although I can't remember now the details on those.
On one particular day the sun was shining brightly, the temps were high and we were dry. So I left my new bride fishing and headed to town to buy some liquid refreshment. Upon returning to the lake I perceived my darling "fighting a big one" - at first glance. It turned out she'd snagged one of my prized flies on something out there. Well, it was obvious (to yours truly, ye inexperienced and oblivious to the truly obvious swain) that since she had on shorts, the water was not that deep, I was wearing jeans - she should simply wade out and save that Royal Coachman! "But I saw a SNAKE!" was the reply. "That was just a common Colorado water snake, non-venomous, no danger!" was the heartless reply. So she waded out, unsnagged the fly and - I've not lived that down in the nearly 40 years of marriage since then!
Flies and floats, yep. Have a couple "just in case". Have tried here many times in the "pesca deportiva" fishmonger ponds. Never managed to snag anything with them. Except for that branch, that time. Bad cast. Didn't ask my bride to retrieve it!
