Short Range Day Today

Post by JimT »

Went out on the Range this morning ... trying to beat the heat. It was a .22 Day .. using my Old Model Single Six, practicing trigger control and sight alignment. I ran 150 rounds offhand and two-hand hold. Ran an additional 25 rounds using my Outers Pistol Perch checking the accuracy potential of the ammo. I was shooting Federal Bulk Pack (550 rounds) that I bought 30 or 35 years ago ... back when they were $10 for 550 rounds. Stuff still works well if I do my part.

I still have some of that stuff and you are correct, it is some pretty good ammo, especially for bulk pack

I have a bunch of Winchester Wildcats I got on sale from K-Mart for $7.99/brick of 500. Sigh, those were the days...

Every weekend morning I’ve been on the ranch shooting 50 rounds of .22 through my Old Model Ruger before I shoot anything else.

I think it’s really helpful.

I’ve been gradually filing the rear sight down to match the sight picture to the point of impact.

I started to file the sight on my OM convertible, but then I discovered that it's pretty much right on with the magnum cylinder. I guess that I need to source another rear sight so I can have one for LR and another for WMR.

I still have some of those $7.00/500 Wildcats too, and they shoot very well and reliably.
I kind of hate to shoot them, so I mostly save them aside because they bring back fond memories of river-bottom stalking with my friends.
The Remington gold ones were unreliable in the 1970's and the ones I have I only use when reliability isn't a big deal.
The Federal bulk-pack of recent manufacture seem quite reliable.

I lost my Acu'rizer (or however he spelt it) but I know it's around somewhere; it would turn the Federal bulk-pack ammo into much more accurate stuff, and even after the swaging it ran fine through my Ruger 96/22 and 77/22; depending on the nose-shape they'd run through my 10/22's as well, but mostly I used them for accurate shooting from the bolt or leverguns.

Doc, I wish I had given Paco's tool a more serious workout before I let it go. Good to know it improved your ammo's performance.
This thread has me thinking back on the old, abused Ruger flat gate I enjoyed plinking with 20 or more years ago. Should have cleaned up that gun and kept it.
