Had a special supper tonight

Post by JBowen »

I came in the house this morning soaking wet from sweating. I had just finished up picking and cleaning the last of the sweet corn out of the garden and told my
wife that I was getting too old for this hot weather and was going to quit gardening. She said she didn't believe me because I have been doing it all my life.
Well she surprised me for supper tonight and she fixed up my favorite meal. It was fried tators with okry (potatoes and okra for those not from the south) sliced tomatoes,
sweet corn on the cobb, cucumbers and onions in vinegar, and hamburger patties. Every single bit of this I raised or grew it. Pretty satisfying reaping the fruits of your
labor.

How many of you garden or farm? It has been keeping pretty busy the last month and have not had any range time lately. Going to have to fix that!

We have raised beds, to early to harvest yet .Can't plant here until after May 10-15. . I have tomatoes on vine half grown. ,cucumbers blooming, peppers about size of tic tac. Zucchini three inches or so . Couple more weeks should have Zuccini .
All planted late May . Really too much intense sun this year plants are yellowing . Rained once in last month.

I water every day ,fertilized twice so far.

Squash bugs got to mt zucchini and straight neck yellow squash about three weeks ago. Only got a couple of pickings. Last year I had a bumper crop and had them running out my ears. This year the grasshoppers came in early and has eaten my green beans and onions down and are eating the pea pods on my Purple Hulls. I planted some
pumpkins last week and the hoppers eat the plants as fast as they come up. It's always a stuff shoot on the pest. I don't spray pesticides.

I stuck six sprouting yellow spuds in the raised bed and have ignored them. Probably ought to check as the heat is killing things. Also have a couple of tomato plants in. Used to do tomatoes, squash, peas, cukes watermelons, beans and corn. Miss it.

I have long cultivated friends who like to garden. Couple of my "main guys" are taking this year off 'cause of "gardening burn-out". Or something.

Nasturiums Planted around your Squash will help keep the bugs at a minimum. I feel really poor if I don't have some seeds in the ground. Used to need some pigs in the pen too!

We always use marigolds around ours. The stinch of them keeps most varmints away.

Bill, I had a good potato crop this year. I planted 7 lbs. of certified Red Pontiac seed and it made about an 80 ft. row. I got a little over 4, five-gallon buckets full in return.
When I was growing up, we would plant a 100# in our garden and then help my Grand Pa plant a 100 lb. We had potatoes 2 -3 times a day to eat and I never got tired of them.

Ed, I will try to remember and plant some of those Nasturtiums and see if it helps and maybe some Marigolds too.
Thanks for the tip.
