Not Cabela's or Bass Pro but an Amazon driver got a Vortex scope off me.
They ALWAYS deliver to my porch but this time the package was left in the newspaper box under my mailbox. when I got the DELIVERED email I went looking for it out front. Nope. I walked down the driveway, not on the mailbox post, not in the mailbox. By chance I saw it stuffed in the paper box. As soon as I grabbed it I knew something was going on - way too light. I cut the packing tape to find the empty Vortex box. This person cut the tape on the bottom of the box and resealed it with Amazon tape. It took some time to get the CS person from some middle eastern country to get what I was explaining but in the end I got it reshipped and delivered to my front porch.

I recently tried to order a Mercury 25 hp outboard from Cabelas and Basspro both trying to take advantage of an advertised rebate. I called 3 times over a period of about a month and was never able to get the motor that I wanted. They constantly tried to push a motor that cost about $1200 more.

Bait and switch is as old as time. Decades ago Four Wheel Parts advertised a Warn winch at a remarkable price. Now this was long before the internet and email. So, it was in a flyer in the mail. Knowing these would be snapped up I drove directly to the nearest outlet and told them I wanted to buy the advertised winch. The salesman used every trick in the book to point me toward a larger and thus full priced winch. After a bit I got really frustrated and ask to see the store manager. The manager was less than gracious but finally told the salesman to "just sell him the winch".

Now that wasn't my first purchase from Four Wheel Parts. But it was my last. I doubt it did any good, but I did sent a letter to corporate letting them know they had lost a customer for life.

On the plus side this pointed me to Dick Cepek. I bought almost all of my Jeep stuff from them until they were sold to Mickey Thompson.

Mickey Thompson, like Dick Cepek has become a mere shadow of the businesses that their founders started.

Being overdue for hearing aids, I really struggle with some of those thick, offshore accents.
I was once a huge Cabela's fan -- they were the Herter's of my middle age-- but I have lost interest since the merger with Bass Pro, which I always thought of as Nascar and Disney meet in a bathroom at Mar-a-Lago.
Their once distinctive product lines are just so meh.

Ahh... dick Cepek's! some time in the 1980s they opened a new store in Garden Grove, not far from where my folks lived. I bought my lift kit for the '72 Blazer I owned at the time there, and a set of Gumbo Mudders, a roll cage, etc... Fun store! I wish I still had that Blazer... along with a few other cars I've owned over the years! Over the last several years I've had to scrounge around to find Remington #10 caps (my prefered cap for competition), at one time opening my last tin for my possible last match with my 1851 2nd Gen Colts. But, after then locating a feller quitting shooting and selling me remaining #10s, I just took delivery of a 1,000 from Bass Pro, picking them up from the local store, avoiding the HazMat charge! Kinda comical in than folks, waiting for "curbside p/u" were still waiting while I walked in, picked up my order, and walked back out! The few steps from the parking lot to inside, and back, didn't offset "convenience"!

One good thing about Amazon when something goes sideways is you can "talk" to a representative to get it squared away but it's in Text instead of needing a translator. So far that system has worked very well and way less aggravating

I’m old. I’m grumpy. And I won’t put up with trying to figure out what English is a second language folks are trying to say.

I just ask for someone that speaks intelligible English. The word intelligible usually confuses the heck out of them. Not knowing what I am saying causes them to pass me up the food chain. So far the second rung has spoken amazingly clear English.

I sometimes wonder if they don’t use poor English skills to frustrate callers in hopes they will just give up.

You know what they say about fishing lures-
They don't have to catch fish, just fisherman!
In all seriousness though, those little crankbaits will probably work very well on bluegills!

ive used the little Rebel crawdad crankbait -- only dives 3 or 4 feet and always gets attention from the panfish

-- Bass Pro and Cabela's used to have separate identities -- with Bass Pro being like Sears and Cabelas being like Dillards or Macy's

(Dillards may be regional , but a department store thats a bit more upscale than Sears, but not Bloomingdales level) - Now they are one and the same with exception of the Gun Library at Cabela's -- but i used to expect to find a little nicer grade of gear at Cabelas - no more

Dont know if its national or regional but Scheels is kicking tail in this area. Not in OKC yet, but Tulsa and Wichita are close enough

Yep.

Not worth the trip anymore.

They sell mostly Asian plastic stuff and Asian clothes that one can buy anywhere else.

And when you buy a gun, they treat you like a criminal - escorting you to the door
and not letting you touch the item until you're outside. No returns for defective firearms,
either - send it to the manufacturer yourself. Can't try a trigger, either. Everything locked
all the time.

More reasons to shop locally!

That has not been my experience.
I opened the package, pulled out the pistol, racked the slide back and locked it, looked it over and was happy with it, filled out the paperwork, boxed up the pistol and walked out carrying it.
It went quickly, cleanly and was a pleasant experience.

The last time I was in the one in Maine, my experience was quite different than yours, Jim.

Maybe they've changed their policies for the better since I was there last. It is to hope! :)

My experience was a couple months ago.
I bought the pistol online from a store in Missouri. Paid for it with credit card. They shipped it free of charge to a store near me. I went to pick it up, expecting to pay shipping and paperwork fees. They charged nothing for the shipping or the paperwork. Handed me the gun when I walked in and identified myself. 10 minutes later I walked out of the store with the gun. It was almost like buying a gun back in the old days when we really were a free people. Younger folks who never experienced that don't really know what they are missing.

Could be the fact that they were the middle man? Maybe it's a different policy store to store?

It's possible. But it demonstrates that often our issues with some business or group or collection of people probably should not be painted all the same color.

The store I got it from is owned by Cabela's so when I bought the gun from Cabela's in another state they were able to ship it to a Cabela's in my state and for me to pick it up as if I had bought it there, since I did essentially buy it there because I bought it from the same business. I did have to fill out the 4473 in my State. But there was no charge, no hassle, no 'holding my hand' and in fact I had no negative experiences whatsoever.

I understand Jim, I'm just looking at all the scenarios of it .
I haven't bought anything new in a while, not that I don't want to but I tend to not buy during blue times( if you get my drift)

Some of those differences can be dependent on State or Local law.
