Re: Hunting with a 1860 Henry,
That’s a great video.
I really enjoyed watching him use that old cooking set to make his coffee. A lot of work but a satisfying return on his labor.
My problem is that I just don’t slow down enough to enjoy life that much.
I’m pretty sure that I am not doing this right.

Great Video...thanks for sharing.
Grandpa Cap'N'Ball must have been a little bitty feller.....I would need a much larger coffee pot.

Re: Hunting with a 1860 Henry,
I’d love to buy some land and have a house built based on one I saw in a small town that was constructed 1870. No electricity, no furniture newer than say 1890. On a river. That would be nice. Not to live, but for a week away from society, yes please.Scott Tschirhart wrote: ↑Fri Jun 07, 2024 7:42 am That’s a great video.

Re: Hunting with a 1860 Henry,
I watched that few days ago, and it was great, thoroughly enjoyed it, I like way he does things! And that coffee set, I first thought, I gotta get one them. Then I remembered, hey, I gotta do it my way. To each his own, and his is great for him, but me, that espresso is two gulps of high octane noth8ng to me.
My way, and I don't do it enough, but I often take my Coleman backpack stove, 10-12oz water, and make very strong real coffee. Black or little creamer, now that's a treat for me. And I've taken it in backpack before, but often leave it on 4w and especially in my canoe, I love to hunt by water. That's on my agenda of I need to do again this fall!
But a good squirrel hunt with my Longbow last week was about same. And I sit on the log where I took this pic, and had my Vienna's & Crackers topped off with a moon piece right after! I love spring woods so much. I went again yesterday saw a fee squirrels but no shots. But it's very rewarding whether you score or not, the hunts and time in woods is what it's all about.

Re: Hunting with a 1860 Henry,
I got one more shot that day but missed. But my favorite I need to do again, is pack my canoe with my regular Coleman stove, hunt till mid day, come back canoe, make coffee, then fry up bacon and eggs, now that's a day!

Re: Hunting with a 1860 Henry,
Kudos on the hunt, and on hunting from boats, which I mostly did in alaska, and on brewing coffee on the road, which I've done with a gimbaled boat stove, and swede stoves under a canteen, and a propane single-burner camp stove. I make cowboy coffee, sometimes in a stainless coffee pot, and sometimes making it in a stainless cup heated with a propane torch.

And cowboy coffee in an old coffee can converted with a metal wire handle on open fire. Drop a sandstone in, enjoy!Grizz wrote: ↑Sat Jun 08, 2024 10:35 amKudos on the hunt, and on hunting from boats, which I mostly did in alaska, and on brewing coffee on the road, which I've done with a gimbaled boat stove, and swede stoves under a canteen, and a propane single-burner camp stove. Old man spoiled me on hunting by boat or canoe, camping in usually most often, Virgin territory! Solitude hard to beat! Lord I need to do this again this fall!

Re: Hunting with a 1860 Henry,
Another good video from Cap And Ball. And I expect that was "expresso" not coffee. A little shot like that goes a long way. An acquired taste for many.

Re: Hunting with a 1860 Henry,
I used to spend hours with a caplock rifle down on the Medina river bottom shooting squirrels and rabbits.
Today I just don’t seem to have the time.
I’m too busy for my own good.

Grizz, I have discovered the joy of good Turkish coffee year ago while in Kyiv, Ukraine. There was a Turkish cafe down below my apartment. I didn't really enjoy the breakfast all that much, but the coffee was amazing. So now I drink it at home or it is very easy to make while camping. Its ground to such a fine form, even if your drink the grinds, its a very fine, unobtrusive powder that settles to the bottom of the cup and whatever you brew it in.

I think a lot of us are right there with you Scott. I am so looking forward to retiring in a couple-few years. Just to slow the heck down...

Thanks Tutt ! I had some Turkish coffee in a restaurant where I was visiting some friends. I was carefully observed, you know, just in case, but it seemed about on par with my daily dosage.
Things are really fine here and we are blessed and happy. I visited my Japan family earlier this year, and I am going to visit My Texas family in July. I don't know how things could get better than that. I have a 45 Super project that I'm going to take with me and look for volunteer hogs for some scientific research!

Re: Hunting with a 1860 Henry,
Good to hear! I have a friend who recently returned from Japan, used to want to go there, not so much anymore but still interested. Texas is on my list again to meet some people. I have always liked the 45 Supe and sounds like a neat project. I ended up going the 10mm route instead since it was easier to get "off the shelf" firearms and ammo for it but always had my eye on the 45 Super.
Life here in SoCal is very different but I've adjusted pretty well. Taking care of my Mother takes a lot of time but it was definitely the right choice and don't regret it. They certainly needed the help down here. We finally made some real progress on the house finally and can have people stay over now. Still more to do of course but so much better. I do have to say I enjoy the weather here more than up north and Mission Viejo is a nice place. Apparently it is one of the largest master planned communities in the USA.
The land was initially considered too hilly to develop, but they worked around the terrain with homes on hilltops and roads running through the valleys (which is why the vary in direction all the time and the direction you started in on a road will certainly change!
) We are only about 7 miles from the coast, similar to Ukiah up north. Never gets cold for me being a Northener and I wear shorts daily except for church. It is close to many of the major sight seeing areas but a safe distance from them too. It is still #5 of the safest cities in California for the time being.
I have most of my rifles out in the new office now and getting back to shooting stuff again. Working on air gun stuff currently and pellets vs slugs in my 30 caliber break barrel. I'm also going to fire lap the barrel this week with a suitable pellet.
I have various other smoke burner projects I'm getting back to as well, but a trip up to L.A. is coming due to see Jim W and Old Savage again.
Glad to hear things going well! No trips to Ukraine this year, I did go September of 23 via Poland but going to sit this year out, things really volatile there right now, even for me.
