Want a stainless Marlin in .45 Colt?
Anyone know how possible it would be to re-bore a .44 Mag 1894SS to .45 Colt? Would you have to re-barrel it instead?

I don't know about the boring of the barrel. Oh well, others might.

it should be possible to re-bore it, it may be cheaper to
buy the bbl. and if it is the micro-groove i would just
buy a ballard grooved bbl. but i shoot mostly cast bullets anyways

IIRC, Marlin will do a re-barrel for about $150-175.
Most rebores are about that, but might as well get it done straight from the factory.

About a year and a half back Marlin ran a series of short rifles (16" IIRC) in stainless in all the calibers. The 45 colts sold out fast(you'd think that Marlin could actually have noticed that, but nothing yet), most sold before they were ever built. Even with their resultant current high prices and scarcity, I bet it would still be less $ to buy one of those than do what you are thinking. I'll bet there's more to it than just re boring or replacing the barrel to make it work.

No, the rim size of the 44 Magnum and 45 Colt are only a few thousandths different, (and it's the 45 Colt that's smaller) so the bolt face and extractor shouldn't need to be altered. You do need to be sure and use modern 45 Colt brass that has the extractor relief groove above the rim, I think all cases manufactured now does have this. 45 Colt cartridges will fit in the magazine tube, and should feed okay through the rifle even though they may sit at a little different angle than 44 magnum due to the larger case body of the 45 Colt. I would opt to simply change the barrel, and let Marlin do it if they are willing to put a 20"+ 45 Colt barrel on the 44 Magnum rifle. If Marlin won't Dave Clay, or Mic McPherson or one of the other good lever rifle smiths shouldn't have any trouble making this work.
