1954 Marlin 336 Texan arrives... is a 1952- first prod yr!

Post by O.S.O.K. »

And it's in great shape! Won this on a gunbroker auction. There was another member here that acutally saw this in the shop in Georgia and passed it up... ouch. Thank you for passing it up :wink: Weird how I can bid on a gun on-line and another member here sees the same gun in person... small world.

This is a pre-microgroove barreled 30-30. It has 4 lands, 4 grooves. Bore looks good but needs cleaning - has pretty bad copper fouling like most seem to when you get em. Top of receiver has the wavy lines engraved. No extra holes drilled anywhere.

Here are the pics from the auction - same as on the other thread I posted about rechambering.... which isn't going to happnen - did'nt realize what this was! :shock:

Serial number is J39XXX and the armscollectors site that dates Marlins indicates "The year of manufacture for J = 1952.

First Texan-2/7/1952-serrations on top." So it's actually a first year production Texan! Woohhooo!

Man, did I fall into this or what? I didn't even realize how special it was - just thought it was a nice older 336 in good condition. I mean, this seems pretty dang special to me.

Thanks to all of you that provided feedback and advice - Hobbie in particular.

Can't wait to clean it up and take it to the range. :)

Good find. I also recently acquired a first year Texan in "very" good shape. S/N J242xx. I bought it thinking about a mag conversion project and changed my mind. Looks like at least two of them got spared.

You are welcome there OSOK, she is indeed a beautiful rifle and I was extremely tempted, but just did not need another Texan as this time. Maybe next week I will, LOL. I'm very hapy that another member of Leverguns is now the new owner and that the Texan had arrived in Texas. Give her a good carressing of Johnson's paste wax for me. Let us all know how she shoots for you, but I think we already know it will be great.

That IS nice! :mrgreen: I noticed right off she's D&T for the receiver sight so you're good to hook there. The non-ramped front sight is a nice difference from later guns like mine. I notice there's no white line spacer, frankly, I think they look better without the white plastic spacer. However, as I type this, memory fails as to whether they came from the factory that way. Yes, I think you lucked into a jewel and the other member probably has at least slightly sore buttocks and legs from kicking himself for passing this by. :D
Sincerely,

Hobie

Nice catch !

IIRC, Marlin 336's had the top lines, up until they were factory D/T'd for scope mounts in 1956.

Now, all you need's a brass saddle ring for her Bar-B-Q goin's !

Congrats on the fine older Marlin. Joey likes it.
Serial number is J39XXX and the armscollectors site that dates Marlins indicates "The year of manufacture for J = 1952.
J = 1952 year of manufacture.
J = Joe, also manufactured in 1952.
What a coincidence.

Thanks all! Especially Longfin for not buying out from under my bidding :) Good to know that you've got two already - they are very cool. I thought the "fat" forestock would bug me but it's much slimmer "in person" and I like it.

Hobbie - I just won a gunbroker auction for a $8 shipped "wide" elevator for the rear sight - the original was removed to lower the sight enough for the receiver sight that was in place. I know this because a) the elevator is missing and rear sight is cut for one (narrower in the back) and b) there was dried oil residue where the receiver sight was placed and no blind screws in the holes (there are now). I don't know about the white spacers for this year... I like the way it looks w/o though...

I've decided to just put the rear elevator in place and leave it as is. My 47 year old eyes can still see the sights fine as they are far enough down the barrel and don't fuzz out.

Joe - I have a birthyear 61 m94 Winchester that I bought just because of that and the fact that it's a pre-64. A good excuse to buy a rifle IMHO ;)

I'll post a report after I take it to the range. The bore looks really good - like new, so I'm expecting it to shoot great.
