Range Report: Henry H001 .22 Levergun

Post by Pete44ru »

I shot my new-to-me H001 at my club this morning, with the issue barrel open sights, and a few different brands/types of ammo.
I shot on the pistol range, at a paced 30yds, off my ammo toolbox while sitting - using a center hold on the bull.

To my surprise, the rifle was essentially zeroed as purchased, showing only minor ammo preferences and ensuing POI changes.

This is with Federal Hi-Speed HP bulk, from WallyWorld (left). Then with Winchester Dynapoint hunting ammo (right).

Satisfied, I tried some CCI .22 Longs, I had (left), then Remington .22 Shorts (right)

The Henry's action worked with silky smoothness, except for a slight hesitancy once while cycling the .22 Shorts - which could also have been my mis-stroking the lever that one time, as it didn't recur.
This Henry didn't seem to like the Shorts as well as the longer fodder, group-wise.

My conclusion: A very good value, at twice the price.

My old Erma model was accurate right out the box too! They are good value and as smooth as silk. 8)

Pete,

Good for you ! And you're right, those Henrys are smoooth.

If you get the chance, throw in some Stingers and Mini Mags. They have shot the best out of my Henry.
...and I don't think he even knows it...Walks around with a half-assed grin...If he feels fear, he don't show it. Just rides into hell and back again.

I agree with meanc. CCI Mini Mags are the favorite of my Henry too.

I'll have to give the CCI mini-mags a whirl in my son's H001L.

Congrats Pete. I agree with you 110% - a great value at twice the price. My son's seems to digest everything from cheapo Winchester Wildcats up through some target and hunting stuff with equal abandon. He likes it because he thinks he looks like John Wayne with it. Probably the only 10-year old left in the country who loves the Duke like we all did!!! :D

Good report and done with a really great little carbine. The one my grandson bought a couple of weeks ago at Wal Mart has the smoothest action that I have ever used. It is very accurate and real handy to use.

I have a H001T with a Pedersoli tang sight and on a cheap rest, I can put 10 rounds into a 2-inch circle at 50 yards. Offhand , the grouping moves out to about 4 inches at the same distance.

I love my Henry - it's about 8,000 rounds old.
