Doggie found a skunk

Post by Buffboy »

Imagine my joy at letting in the dog this morning and that wonderfull aroma hits as he goes by. The whole house is now filled with this wonderfull aroma and he's out on his cable. A while back I read of a great non toxic, common household, method to nutralize that smell. I recall it had peroxide in it. Thought someone sent it to me in an email but I havent' found it yet. Anyone got a clue.

The only household "remedy" I've heard of for "eau d' country kitty" is tomato juice. That and time. LOT'S of time. :-) The spray is oil based, so you need to get that oil out of the dog's fur, not an easy task by any means.

Hey, why not Brake Cleaner or Birchwood-Casey GunScrubber?

I did a little searching on the net before work. I've used tomato juice before and I was pretty underwhelmed. Here's the recipie I used from a pet forum:

1 bottle hydrogen peroxide
1/2 bottle water
1/4 cup baking soda
1 tsp. Dog shampoo

Mix hydrogen peroxide with water. Add baking soda and dog shampoo.
Mix and pour into a squirt bottle.
Spray entire bottle onto your dog, being careful not to get it directly into his eyes and nose.
Work it into his fur. Let it sit for five to ten minutes.
Rinse, and your dog will have no odor. When he sits on your lap,
you won't be able to smell anything.

The Results:

He really didn't like this, but then he wasn't gonna like anything I did, so didn't matter. I saturated his fur as best I could. I was very carefull about avoiding his eyes, mouth, and nose. He screamed during the whole process, Shiba-inu, they scream, they don't growl or whine. I imagine the water from the hose on his rinse was pretty cold. Hey this program works. The only smell he's got now is on the scruff of his neck, he was facing the skunk, and I just couldn't get that as wet without risking getting this in his eyes, even that is pretty light. My wife and I don't notice it much but the other dog and the cats sure do still and are giving him a wide bearth. The good news is the little bugger is smart, I'll bet he WILL leave skunks alone now.

COOL a Shiba Inu? Please post pictures of your's.

Not to hijack the thread but her's my Tippy

L to R (i'm guessing 1963 or 4 Grant Heights, Tokyo) My bro Bo, our adopted stray Tippy (classic Shiba Inu looks except for his dark muzzle), sis Patsy behind Tippy, sis Marvina holding Tippy's chin, ME smiling at Tippy while sitting in lap of my mom's best friend Mrs. Tally (pretty Korean lady my favorite "aunt", wife of my Dad's shooting buddy Tom Tally), far right shadows my eldest sis Evelyn.
Tippy was a great dog and we brought him with us to Hawaii when we moved here in '66. His thick fur made hot humid Hawaii uncorfortable for him he prefering the Tokyo winters. This is the only picture of Tippy I know of. He was a scrapper too no affraid of any other dogs, and a great watch dog.

Skunk Clean is what a friend used and he said it worked excellent. I am not sure where he got it but sounds like it would be worth a look.

A link to video my wife shot last winter after the first snow. The video is 323kb, so it's not huge. I've seen Shiba's colored like yours Ji. They aren't the "prefered" color for the breeders but that scheme shows up once in a while. Mine is colored "flak", again not a prefered color, but he's a cool looking dog. They aren't for the faint of heart. Besides the screeming when upset, lonely, just to hear themselves  (when he's tied up you'd swear someone was over there torturing him, and they do bark sometimes), their vocals sometimes make me think he's trying to talk to me. He has things he says for different purposes, hard to explain without you being around him. I've been assured that mine is not unusual by a couple people more familiar with the breed. They are almost like a big cat in outlook, very independent. Ain't scared of nothing, very friendly and curious. Quick learners, very clean usually(curiousity overroad that yesterday). Mine doesn't have a nose or at least never can find anything with it(but I'll bet he remembers that smell). He seems to take heat pretty well. If you download the video you can see cold doesnt' bother him much.

Thanks for the info. It's 2:50 here in So Cal and my dog (a chihuahua) just got hit. I immediately remembered this thread and after an hour of baths, well, she smells much better, but I'm sure it will be a while before her face gets totally cleared up.

It sure is great, all the quality info that can be obtained from one site.

Thanks again.

1 Qt 3% hydrogen peroxide (brown plastic bottle drugstore stuff)
1/4 cup baking soda
1 teaspoon liquid detergent (dish or laundry)

Mix in an open container, keep away from eyes, rugs, furniture & upholstery.

It works instantly.

Do not make ahead of time - use it mixed fresh.
Do not mix/cap - it can foam & "blow".
It's non-toxic, and may be dumped anywhere bleach can.

I discussed the subject of my retrievers getting sprayed by a skunk a couple of years ago with my vet, who also has several labs. He said the best bath solution to use is "Vagisil" douche purchased at any drug store. The douche comes in both a concentrate and premixed, and he said it had to be the PREMIXED douche. If I recall correctly, it's the one in the purple bottle. No laughs from you guys! He said it works so well you can bring your dog inside after giving your skunk sprayed pooch a Vagisil bath. (Now, are you man enough to buy it, or are you going to send your wife in for it???) :D :D :D

glad to be of service sir.

I am probably late here, but the tomato juice works great! Years ago my dog came in with the same sweet aroma  I dragged him outside and put him in the washtub outside and proceeded to wrestle with him for about 30 minutes and every can of tomato juice I both my and the neighbors house :!: We were both covered in it but the only thing we smelled like was tomatos. We were both clean enough to come back inside about an hour later. Still, every once in awhile, for the next several days we would catch a distant whiff of funk off that dog.

Buffboy,
Cool little dog. I am glad the peroxide shampoo worked for you.
We had a Shiba Inu her name was Kinu Kitsu, she was great, but that scream, not much like it. There fur is so thick it is hard to get it soaked with out holding it under water for a few minutes.

Ours never got into it with a skunk but any small animals were targets. She was vicious, unrelentless killer of rats and squirrels.

Thats funny I just saw this is a old post.

WOW This is an OLDIE post 2 days before my mom passed away.

I have a friend in Kalipornia with 4 Bull Mastiffs which have gotten into skunks, and he swears by "Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Castile Soap". It's decent stuff available at most natural food outlets.

Douche a dog? I am fairly sure this is illegal. Even in Texas.

My dog once got sprayed twice in one week. I had used all of the tomato juice I had the first time around, so I used Bloody Mary Mix. Yeah, it worked.......sorta! I hear that the Peroxide recipe is much more effective.

What Buffboy and Pete44ru said. But I use carpet fresh (baking soda with fragrance added) Also run in the fields in the early morning dew. Then I had my English Springers make many water retrives in a pond. Return home and brush a little more baking soda in their coats. All was well until I yelled a loud "hup" to the dogs. Hup in skunk means let her rip!

That recipe flat works. My all-time favorite cat got into it with a skunk
(but only once! ), and my wife bathed him in that solution. Oh,
he was NOT a happy cat!! He was even angrier when she went to dry
him with the hair dryer! When I got home he was out on the
deck looking like a drowned rat, and just pi**ed off at the world. We
still laugh about it!

Tomato Juice will help tone it down but wont eliminate it. Your gonna have that smell every time it rains for a while.

Hydrogen Peroxide & baking soda followed by a good bath with Dawn dishwashing soap..
Politicians and diapers both require frequent changing for the EXACT same reason!
