Whenever I hear or hear about the bagpipes I always remember this line from the movie "Paratrooper".

“I’m sorry for the man who hears the pipes, and who wisnae born in Scotland.”

It stared Alan Ladd, and had a very young future Treker Patric Doonan. Yep, he was billed with out the "k" in his first name.
Jeepnik AKA "Old Eyes"
"Go low, go slow and preferably in the dark" The old Sarge (he was maybe 24.
"Freedom is never more that a generation from extinction" Ronald Reagan
"Every man should have at least one good rifle and know how to use it" Dad

that's interesting. I heard that quote above from my Dad when I was youngish at home and dina ken what a bagpipe is, which is a long way from the predecessors . . .
.
bag pipes and tin whistles and ocarinas all give me a migrain type tooth ache, even though my teeth live in a jar. THAT's how painful it is.
.
but I suppose it could make the clan feel extremely blood thirsty I guess :D

The inventor of the bagpipes was inspired when he saw a man carrying an indignant, astatic pig under his arm. Unfortunately, the man-made sound never equaled the purity of sound achieved by the pig.

NICE! There must be a cartoon associated with the notion. Pig under arm. Legs pointed up. etc.

Now fellas, there are some of us whose cups runneth over with British Isles DNA who can get positively choked up hearing the pipes. I haven't much Scots in me, but dinna forget the lovely Northumbrian small pipes and many, many other regional variants.

And then there are the Uilleann pipes.

From a bagpiper - A personal Story.

As a bagpiper, I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper's cemetery in the Saskatchewan back country.

As I was not familiar with the backwoods, I got lost but I didn't stop for directions.

I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral director had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch.

I felt badly and apologized to the men for being late. I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. I didn't know what else to do, so I started to play.

The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends. I played like I've never played before for this homeless man.

And as I played 'Amazing Grace,' the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept, we all wept together.

When I finished I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car. Though my head hung low, my heart was full.

As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say, "I never seen nothin' like that before and I've been putting in septic tanks for twenty years."

more input please

I read an account of a battle where the pipes could be heard 10 miles away. Is this possible? I could see a battle use for the pipes if they were sending tactical control messages . . . much quicker than sending a runner, and more likely the message goes through . . . , a predecessor to the bugler? OR the follow-up to the shofar?
.
big BUT, I have never heard of this happening, have you?

If you wanted to give your enemy the trembles at distance in Bronze Age Ireland, you had your dord/trumpa players assemble and send some notes. That low note is just tremendous. Blaine likely knows way more about this than I do.

And then there was the Iron Age Celtic Carnyx, which this kid sure knows how to play!
