OT - Prayer request (it comes in threes)

Post by Ysabel Kid »

Fellas -

Well, as they say, bad luck comes in threes.

Part 1 - got pulled over and was given a speeding ticket yesterday - on Father's Day - with my wife and kids with me - for doing 54 in a 45 coming down a hill. I admit I was doing it - trying to be cheap and conserving gas by not riding the break. Rolling hills, with the next upgrade a few hundred yards away. Would still have had to hit the gas; not enough momentum to carry me through. First ticket in a decade. Hard to be so loyal to LEO's when they do this...

Part 2 - A/C at the house went out yesterday. Guy came in today and I got "lucky" - only $403 in repair cost. I say "only" because my brother had a unit go out last week which needed replaced as it is beyond repair. He was quoted $14,000 and change!!!

Part 3 - the prayer request part. You'll recall I asked for your prayers a few months ago for two of my wife's cousins who were battling cancer. One of them passed this morning - only 48 years old. Her suffering is done, and I am sure she is with our Lord now. If you could, please drop a prayer for her immediate and extended family and friends, especially her mother, as they cope with the loss of someone so young.

Thanks guys!

A prayer sent for you and your wife's cousin's family, Ysabel. Very sad news. Sort of puts the other stuff in perspective though. Count your Blessings, Buddy. (Sorry to hear about the ticket and AC stuff. Got into a fender bender on my birthday one time, so I know how you feel. )

Last time I got pulled over, I had just left a convenience store and stepped on the accellerator. The car has two floormats rubber over carpet, and the rubber one somehow had scooted forward and wedged the accellerator pedal about halfway down. By the time I realized the car had a life of its own and reached down to dislodge the mat and pedal, I went sailing by a PA state cop, doing 48 in a 35. He knocked 10 mph off (38 in a 35) when I explained what happened, and tossed carpet mat that was under the rubber mat into the trunk. Still cost me $150+ with all the fees and add-ons.

No mention of the "equipment failure" related to the jammed pedal that caused the violation, but there was an uncased SAR-3 AK clone on the back seat, unloaded. I didn't even have a mag for it in the car. He asked if it was Airsoft, I said no, real deal.

"Loaded?"
"No, empty, and there's no mag and no ammo for that gun in the car."
"Any other guns in the car?"
"In the wayback, in a case."
"Can I take a look?"
"Is it pertinent to the speeding charge?"
"No, but . . . "
"Do you have reasonable suspicion?"
"No, but . . . "
"Officer, you yourself said that this was my first violation in PA since I moved back in 1992. I'm not being difficult, just trying to determine if I should call an attorney."
"That's up to you. I'd just like to see the weapon and make sure things are OK."
"OK, fair enough."

I opened the hatch, then unlocked the case and flipped open the lid to reveal a Sterling Mk4 submachine gun, stock folded up under the receiver tube. Next to the receiver tube was a 1/4 size reduced and laminated approved ATF Form 4.

He looked at it, didn't ask to pick it up or anything, just looked at it for maybe 15-20 seconds and finally said "Imperial Blaster from Star Wars. Cool. Thanks. I'm a big fan, too, but never wanted to spend the change on one of those. You got Stormtrooper armor, too?"
"No."
"Lock it up, and wait in your car. I'll be back with the citation in a minute."

Huh? Did that just happen?

I bit my cheek so hard to keep from laughing that I tasted blood.

Prayers said for all needing it.

Now about that AC... I meet with one AC guy tomorrow evening about Mom's unit which needs replacement (condenser unit and coil and that's it) and we'll see. If he quotes $14000 I'm not going to be happy. No it isn't my money but...
Sincerely,

Hobie

Thank you all for your prayers. I have another request for some of you. I do not mean to nag, and I have no right to "get into your business", but if you smoke, please stop. My wife's cousin was only 48 years old - and had smoked since she was a teen. It was mouth cancer that spread. They ended up taking out half her jaw, her tongue, and other parts of her face. Thought they had it all, and it came back, with a tumor which went from nothing to grapefruit size in a month. Had also spread throughout other parts. No viewing - she had wasted away to nothing and was suffering horribly in the end. I had a friend who worked for a distributor on my products who passed away a few years back - in his mid-forties - from throat cancer. Had only been an occasional cigar smoker. Left two young boys to grow up without a father.

I am not one of those "anti-smoking" nut-jobs that wants to see it banned. In fact, I get upset when people tramble on others' rights - including the personal property rights of businesses to allow smoking on their premises. Rather, I've just seen cancer related to smoking impact too many loved ones. One of my grandfather's died from lung cancer before I was born - never got to know that WWI vet. My Mother and my FIL both have emphysema and both were smokers. My Mom walks around with oxygen on most of the time. I know it is not easy to quit - but for your loved ones, for your friends, for your communities - and for you, please try.

Okay, I'll quit preaching now. Again, not trying to go where I wasn't invited, but I'd love to be chatting with you all for years to come, and would like to get a chance to meet you face-to-face someday while we are all still trodding this planet...

Thanks again for the prayers!

Prayers sent.

In my state, a 10 mph over ticket will cost $165 plus the insurance goes up $200 every six months for three years.

Fight the ticket.

You've got no chance of winning if you just roll over. Even if you lose, the penalties remain the same, but you made the cop, his partner, the DA, judge, bailiff, stenographer wait on you while you politely make them earn that $165.

If everyone fought every ticket, the costs would cause the court system would put a stop to the fleecing by municipalities and allow the LEOs to do the job they signed on for.

Kind regards,
Tycer

I always recommend going to fight the ticket. generally points are reduced and sometimes, the fines are too. I haven't had a ticket in years but insurance companies seem to use any excuse to raise their rates. Big Oil, Insurance Companies, Medical fraud, Court systems ....... don't get me started. I'm suppose to be resting. :D
