OT- Fall food plots

Post by JBowen »

For those of you who plant food plots for deer, what do you like?
I have not ever planted one before, but now I have the opportunity to. I know purple hull peas, oats, wheat and turnips are some of the old
stand-bys in my area. I never have heard anybody bragging about Biologic or any of the blends sold in the sporting goods section.

I tried a couple name brands and none grew well.
I did almost an acre of 'reclaimed land' in clover and it grows great! Nice thing about clover is it regenerates the soil nitrogen levels.
I've also tried turnips but not a great producer.

My BIL does it every year….corn and pumpkins….deer love pumpkins…..and of course, a salt lick…….I put a 50 pounder out back about every 6 months and they are on it every day, throughout the spring and summer….

Old Savage puts Acme brand bird seed in his console but sometimes the Wiley Coyote gets in.

I had not thought about clover, even though I am planning to plant Crimson clover in my garden as a cover crop and to add nitrogen.
Great feedback,
Thanks,

Six, I plan to put out some salt and a corn feeder as well. I am planning to get started next week when the heat wave slacks off below 100*.

I had a pair of those road runners hanging earlier this summer, but have not seen them in a while. Maybe I should order some Acme bird seed!

Yea…order some…Old Savage has a feed store where you send the money to but only thing you get back are empty feed bags.

On a serious note, even a feeder with cracked corn will work……don’t know the laws in your state but some prohibit feeding 30-60 days before the season opener…….we feed em but I’m done hunting as I just can’t see shooting a pet deer as most of them are around here.

In my day it was hard to get a hundred yards from a deer. …now, they eat right up to the house…….takes the sport out of it along with a heavy heart….——006

I know what what you mean. It takes the sport out it. I am setting this up for my 12 year old grandson who has had bad luck the last 2 years. I want to keep him interested.
Here in Arkansas we can feed on private property only.
My hunting spot is in the National Forest on a bench that has a lot of White Oaks and a good acorn crop most years.
