Browning 1886 carbine 45-70 22inch barrel help

Post by haddon1 »

HI EVERYONE,
Just bought a new to me B-1886, but can't find any where on web the Browning chart to date it as far as the serial numbers. ANYBODY got that Browning chart for the B-1886 dates of manufacture? THANKS ALOT! Please pass on! I know they made some in 1986 and 1992.

I may be a bit off, but I'm pretty sure it was around 1992 that all of the SRCs were manufactured. Nice guns...

I believe that is correct, unless they made some commemorative version after that point. I believe all the octagon rilfes were made in 1986, other than the Forest Service commemorative guns.

Isnt it amazing how many people post without reading the thread?

Hobie will probably have the dates. He was hanging around here earlier. 1886.

Your serial number will have 5 numbers then the two digit date code.
I'm sure yours will be NY = 92

Date of Manufacture
is a two digit code
Z=1
Y=2
X=3
W=4
V=5
T=6
R=7
P=8
N=9
M=0

Howdy gents,

I'm new here. I'm a CAS shooter and fan of the old-fashion long distance game as well.

I've got a question for advanced collectors of the modern Browning-Miroku 1886 reproductions.

I know of two runs of 'standard' grade Browning '86's: In 1986 the 1886 Rifle with 26" octagon barrel, blue receiver and in 1992 the SRC, blue reciever with 22" barrel. I also know of the high grade engraved models with nice wood.

A recently saw a Browning/Miroku SRC with a "NY" serial number (I believe indicating 1992 manufacture) with a beautiful case colored reciever. The owner/seller indicated he received it "from the factory" with the case coloring. The SRC had no other embelishments (engraving or inlays) and had standard wood. It had a round 22' barrel, chambering was 45-70

Did such an SRC ever exist as a standard factory offering or was this an aftermarket addition?

Thanks for your wisdom,

Pancho

All the color-cased Browning 1886 SRCs I know of are after-market. Turnbull and others have done this. I have seen photos of three (3) different such guns. AFAIK, NONE OF THE BROWNINGS were factory CC.

Hobie
