Well I thought this was a Marlin promotional item, but......

Post by jdad »

I thought I just spent a dollar for a Marlin promotional bottle opener and screwdriver combo. Vall informed me it's actually a Marlin choke tube spanner wrench. I still think it would be a great bottle opener. :D

I hate it when I have to look up words.

But you are right, "spanner wrench" would be a tautology.

No, it's not:

tau·tol·o·gy

1. needless repetition of an idea, esp. in words other than those of the immediate context, without imparting additional force or clearness, as in “widow woman.”
2. an instance of such repetition.
3. Logic. a. a compound propositional form all of whose instances are true, as “A or not A.”
b. an instance of such a form, as “This candidate will win or will not win.”

There are many forms of wrenches, spanner describes only one. Spanner is also not necessarily a wrench of any form, either. So, it is not a tautology, unless you are in England where that's what they call any form of wrench. But we aren't in England, are we.

That is the combination tool that came with the little Papoose takedown semiauto .22 rifle. I've got the whole kit right here, rifle, tool, and floating carry case.

Ahh, but see, you contridicted yourself with the wiki.

A spanner is always a wrench (I have never encountered a spanner that wasn't a wrench...), but a wrench is not necessairly a spanner... just as a widow is always a woman, but a woman is not always a widow.

Spanner wrench and widow woman are identical tautologies - at least deninitionally, though not always colloquially. ;)
