Old 1st Generation Colt. Has been rusted and buffed until the lettering is gone .. typical of a hard-used gun. I've had several in the same condition but were still fine shooting guns.

Serial number dated to 1887.

The bore and chambers look good

Cool Roscoe. Looks like a hand cut front sight dovetail, not great, not terrible.

There’s wisdom in that warning.

Looks short enough to carry easily.

Feels great in the hand too. Locks up well. I wonder if it would be safe with standard Remington factory loads? They are pretty tame but I don’t think I’d recommend getting shot with one.

I don't have that sort of knowledge. Perhaps Sixgun can tell you. He knows the old guns.

Every thing deteriorates over time. 1887 is pre-steel I think, so cast iron.

Cute gun, but not one I'd shoot.

Follow up:

I was able to procure a modern cylinder from Jim Taylor and I’m working on fitting it. The cylinder has too much travel back and forth in the frame so the first order of business is to fit a new cylinder bushing. Look at the difference between these two bushings.

The new cylinder looks right but I will need to fit a different bolt to the frame.

I was just at buffalo arms yesterday. I like to stop by and pick up supplies when heading to town.

Cool! The email says my new bolt has shipped.

I should have this old shooter up and running soon.

It’s a great gun and supplies shop, but there’s not really a store front. Locals knock on the door and go in, one of the friendly folks that are sitting in front of a computer, will happily go thru their warehouse type location (99% of there business is on line) and gather up your items. You will have a hard time finding it, as it looks like a big metal barn, with no shingle hanging out front.
If you’re in the area, drop me a note, I’ll show you around places you will never know about or see on your own. My buddy Mark and I were looking for a “put in and take out” to do a canoe, and float trip on the Pack river. Sorry to drift off the original post. Buffalo Arms us a great source for classic parts and firearms.
