Re: Seven leaf Winchester rear sight
Interesting sight, and test. I've always wondered how a shooter who bought a sight like that could do two things. First judge distance well enough to select the right blade height; and second remember which blade to use for a certain distance?

I never quite got the need for that particular Winchester sight. I also wish he'd have tested at 1100 fps or so instead of 750 fps. I suppose he had to accommodate the weak rifling.
What I do love though, is the Sheard Triple-Leaf.

More likely he was being careful with the weak toggle link design of an 1873 than weak rifling.Rimfire McNutjob wrote: ↑Tue Jun 13, 2023 2:30 pm I never quite got the need for that particular Winchester sight. Probably. He made a point to talk about how shallow the rifling was ... I might have assumed that was related.marlinman93 wrote: ↑Wed Jun 14, 2023 9:41 am More likely he was being careful with the weak toggle link design of an 1873 than weak rifling.
But didn't a .44 WCF leave the barrel of a rifle at over 1000fps even with black powder back in the day? Maybe the gun just has a lot of mileage on it and he's worried it's nearing the end of its life.
