Yep, pure lead balls and much lower velocities. It's impossible to say whether the Civil War era ones were bullets or round balls but either way they need to go slower to reduce the disintegration of the projectiles.
Definitely need to slow the bullets down... either by more distance between them, or slower velocity. Plus, can't imagine how even 8 or 9 Bhn bullets would fuse. Need to use pure lead.

I think they were working on dropping the charges to slow things down late in the video. For example, they we too low at one point and got a bullet stuck in the barrel that they had to then push out.
