Audie Murphy
Audie Murphy, the most-decorated U.S. soldier of World War II, died 52 years ago today in a civilian airplane crash. His grave is the second-most visited behind JFK's at Arlington National Cemetery (though I suspect that the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is the most visited of all). I watched "To Hell and Back" earlier today. Audie struggled with what we now know as PTSD. Though his westerns weren't the best, I always enjoyed them, mainly just to watch a real American hero in every sense of word. The main hero of the J.T. Edson "Floating Outfit" westerns, Captain Dustine Edward Mardsen Fog, was based on Audie Murphy per Mr. Edson.

Re: Audie Murphy
Audie Murphy certainly experienced a heck of a lot in his 45 years. May he rest in peace.

Re: Audie Murphy
I've always admired and respected Audie Murphy for his military service, and his personal life after the military. As you mentioned his westerns were usually not as good as some others, but I still watch just because I like old westerns, or almost any decent western.

Re: Audie Murphy
I remember reading that at the premiere of “To hell and back” the President said they should of used a more convincing lead actor without realizing it was Audie playing himself. It goes to show you never judge a person by their size like the old saying goes “It s not about the size of the dog in the fight it s about the size of the fight in the dog.”

One of my favorite Western stars. He has several good ones.
Re: Audie Murphy
I grew up hunting all along the surrounding area where the plane crashed on side of Brush Mountain in Jefferson National forest. Years ago access to the crash site meant long walk up hill on National Forest side .Using Appalachian trail . The south side was a path up private property ,closer .But in the late 80's or early 90's they opened a public road access on South side to drive up close .
The tops of Brush Mountain had many miles of mountain road built for fire watch towers way back . Those old roads had mud holes that would swallow a standard truck.
Wife had family that were part of the search and rescue local volunteers.
Never could figure how they ended up that far off course as their flight path was Atlanta to Martinsville VA
Plane hit the North Side if Brush Mountain ,like they had went 100's of miles off course and then turned back .
Always liked some of his old westerns on tnt.
RIP
