Parker puppies ( OT CHANGED)

Parker has started the first stages of labor. Was a very restless night, lots of pacing, panting- very uncomfortable girl!

This morning we went out the door and she did her business as usual then started to look for a denning sight, under the boxwoods along the back of the house- 0430 and im trying to get her back in the house!

Anyhow, puppies are IMMINENT!

Best of luck to a smooth delivery for Parker. Hope she has a good litter of pups.

Thanks Jay, actually the first few weeks are the easy part! Fingers crossed Parker is a good momma- if I have to bottle feed then all bets are off!!!!!!

Haha yeah I guess I typed before I thought about it enough. That makes sense. Once them little buggers are all running in different directions, the real fun starts. Ive never done a littler of pups before.

It's a lot of fun. People ask 'how can you stand letting them go?' I answer - you realize how much work 1 puppy is right? Now multiply that by X number of puppies! Yes it sucks send puppies away but boy oh boy the puddles, piles, chewing on stuff, getting into everything- it's more fun than anyone can imagine!!

Nothing to report... still lots of panting and restlessness. Her temperature has dropped but sometimes it drops then goes back up and drops again before actual labor begins.

No cigars, can't take tar tongue the next morning!
Parker is taking her own sweet time! Still not much in they way of nesting but some discharge so things might progress here overnight.
I could use another nap!!

Well it appears that we have 5 puppies.
2 yellow girls, 2 yellow boys and a black boy.
Parker had extremely easy deliveries, was a bit freaked out by the first puppy but once instinct kicked in its been easy.
I have been up for 24 hours plus!
Now I need to mop the floor, clean the whelping box shower and get to the vet for a health check before I can get some sack time!

I'm a 'real breeder ' now, I've had whole litters survive, lost a pup at a week and now this.

Momma is going a wonderful job, even gently moving them by mouth around the box. Im not happy about that but nothing I can do.

It's been 5 years since Parkers litter, I forgot how much mess was involved with whelping!

So she delivered a second still born... finally found an emergency clinic that would xray her, another pup still in there.
Gave her a shot of oxytocin to speed along the labor. Puppies are nursing and she is asleep!

I still haven't slept or eaten since 7 last night! I'm ready to curl up alongside Parker and crash.

Sadly the last pup was not alive at birth. Vet said her blood work was normal, calcium was low but normal range- that is responsible for the birthing process.
Why? I dunno... happy day but sad.

I've finally had a chance to eat something- cheese and crackers. Next step to the land of Nod!

Well we survived the night! The first few days are kind of tenuous for puppy survival. Moms sleeping on them, they move off and get cold( newborns can't regulate body temp), the list goes on.
This morning I weighed each pup- gotta make sure they are growing- put the pups into the incubator tote so I can clean the whelping box and Parker is taking the puppies out to put back into the box. So I take them back out and put them on the dog bed, clean the box and put them back in the box and she takes them back to the bed! I'm too tired to argue with her!

She is and she is VERY serious about the care of her puppies! Try as I might I couldn't get her to got out today! She went an honest 12 hours without a bathroom break! She wouldn't even get up and leave the whelping box to eat! Very dedicated to say the least.

0300 and Parker comes to get me, she is in a tizzy! I jump out of be, throw some clothes on and her puppies are GONE ! Now I'm in a tizzy! No not on the dog bed!? Ah there they are, on the couch... Safe and sound. Guess she didn't know how to get back on the couch without landing on them? Back In the box with ya! And I went back to bed til the alarm at 0500.

Yes Lenn, she will gain quite a lot and lose some with birth and more while nursing.
I'm having a chore to get her away from the puppies. Last night I had to drag her away to go outside.
