On the tailgate. Actually it wasn’t a jigger full, but a Lee dipper 1.3 cm.

L'iL Gun works well in my .480 revolver and levergun. It seems to heat the barrel more than H110 does, but accuracy is better. Not many things need more than a one shot.

Re: 325 gr WFN over a jigger full of Lil Gun
Over 1500 fps. Probably closer to 1700. Factory is 1325 out of a 7.5 inch barrel. L'iL Gun is faster than factory.

Re: 325 gr WFN over a jigger full of Lil Gun
I ordered some 420 gr LFN GC bullets prior to shooting this gun much. They will be in on Wednesday.
I’ll put some shots on paper to get a better idea of what this gun is capable of. And I plan on marking the shots to show which barrel they were fired from.
But I won’t be terribly disappointed if the first load I tried works out to be the best. For my intended uses, it will work just fine and the primers indicate no sign of flattening.
I have exactly 4 rounds of factory 325 gr XTP loads that this gun is regulated for. Not much to set a baseline.

Scott, that is WAY hotter than my 44mag 320gr handgun hunting load that was a hammer on deer. Someone told me with a smirk that my load was only going [about] 1100 fps. Your load sounds like you are prepped for the next Jurassic event. Love your rifle, looks so Handy!
by comparison my 525gr 45/70 load was going 1300 from Blaine's 10 inch bfr. I think your 400gr bullet will stomp locomotives . . . or something like that.

I think the 330s will do everything I could want.
I should have thought about that more before ordering the heavier bullets.

Re: 325 gr WFN over a jigger full of Lil Gun
If it was a "jigger" / 1.3cc's with a slight heap to it, I'm going to call it 20 grains using Lee's bulk density for Lil'Gun. I'll use the Lee 325 grain mold for your bullet and those look like 18" tubes. I'll go 12Kpsi peak and 1200fps. Plinking load.Scott Tschirhart wrote: ↑Sun May 07, 2023 7:34 pm Wish I could guess at the velocity but it probably doesn’t matter.

Re: 330 gr WFN GC over a jigger full of Lil Gun
If you had filled to the level of the bottom of the seated bullet (about 27 grains), it would likely be right where @piller estimated ... 1700fps. And still well under max pressure. As @piller noted, Lil'Gun is excellent for that cartridge with those longer than a handgun barrels.Scott Tschirhart wrote: ↑Wed May 10, 2023 8:11 pm That may be correct. Recoil is mild. Re: 330 gr WFN GC over a jigger full of Lil Gun
I think you're close to 20 grains now with a 1.3cc dipper. The math from the Lee chart says 19.2 but I assumed you might have left it a bit proud of the top of the dipper. I got the overall length and nose to crimp length from Montana BW and built a bullet model for your 330 grain WFN-GC in QL.
But yes, the pressures will be higher when the bullet is loaded farther into the case. I was using a longer COAL than is on that manual page.
You need a chronograph.

I also want to be careful about over stressing this very nice rifle that I as built on a 20 ga shotgun frame. It locks up good and tight but I don’t think it’s as robust as some other action types.
But, I can measure the weight of the charge to get a better idea of where it is. I’ll do that today.

Re: 330 gr WFN GC over a jigger full of Lil Gun
Yeah, I think you're in a good zone already with that 1.3cc dipper. But now I'm curious about the Lee bulk density chart. I'm going to go grab a 1.3cc Lee dipper and a jar of Lil'Gun and see what my scale says.
Update: My Lee 1.3cc dipper doled out 20.2 grains of Lil'Gun twice in a row. Mind you, I had to thump it a couple of times to get the powder clinging to the inside of the dipper to fall out. I wish they were metal and not plastic. I think it's static holding them in there.

325 or more grains at 1300 fps or more has never left a wild hog on its feet for more than 2 steps for me.

That’s exactly what I am getting. I get some powder grains on the handle and wiping them off pretty much levels the powder out in the measure.Rimfire McNutjob wrote: ↑Fri May 12, 2023 8:57 am Yeah, I think you're in a good zone already with that 1.3cc dipper. Factory 325 gr Hornady ammo clocks 1604 fps out of these 16 1/4 inch barrels.
My LiGun load goes 1410 (1179 from a 7.5 inch SRH)

I have read that static electricity causing powder to stick to plastic dippers and funnels can be eliminated by washing them with a dishwashing detergent.

Re: 330 gr WFN GC over a jigger full of Lil Gun
I’ve never has a problem with powder sticking to the scoops.
I just used them for this experiment. I generally use an RCBS powder measure when I don’t use the Dillon.
I think I should be able to push the 330 gr WFN at least as fast as the factory 325 gr XTP. Thinking about LilGun, H110 or 296.

Scott, I get good results out of my Rossi .480 with H4227. It is slower in my Super Redhawk, but is accurate as I can shoot out of the rifle. Sorry, but I haven't chrono'ed this from the rifle.

Re: 330 gr WFN GC over a jigger full of Lil Gun
If I recall, the 'Handi Rifle' or one of the other break open ones that you could get both rifle and shotgun barrels for did have two action types, so you could safely add a shotgun barrel to a rifle frame but not the other way around. Part of the issue was the diameter of the firing pin hole, but I think there was some other factor people mentioned as well. Shotguns just really aren't designed to handle a heck of a lot of pressure, because they don't need to. Actually, a bull with that heavy going anywhere over 1200 ft per second is going to be like a freight train, so there's probably not much point in trying to add much velocity beyond what you already have now, which is obviously well over 1200 ft per second.Scott Tschirhart wrote: ↑Fri May 12, 2023 6:46 am I also want to be careful about over stressing this very nice rifle that I as built on a 20 ga shotgun frame. It seems like I've seen people test penetration in milk jugs with something like 45-70 or 444 Marlin, where they found that the optimal penetration using the same bullets was more than a thousand feet per second but less than 1400 ft per second.

Re: 330 gr WFN GC over a jigger full of Lil Gun
All of that is true. I did it interesting that Jeff Quinn favored a load of 10 gr of Unique under the 325 gr XTP.
Which of course will still shoot through just about anything.
However I was able to find three boxes of factory Hornady ammo yesterday in Hondo. I can’t imagine needing more power than that. The factory load ejects easily and the primers are not in the least bit flattened.
In this light gun there’s a significant amount of recoil. Not terrible but enough to make you pay attention.

Re: 330 gr WFN GC over a jigger full of Lil Gun
Jeff Quinn was right. 10 gr of Unique is a useful load.
Look at these velocities from the double rifle:
1114
1116
1113
1116
1105
This is with a 330 grain WFN. That works out to a 25 TKO.
In a 7.5 inch Super Redhawk it clocks 1009 with a TKO of 23
