Makes you wonder. Revolver discussion
I got in from Miami at 4 this morning and slept for four hours but I had an itchy trigger finger so I went out to the ranch.
I’ve been playing with a Ruger New Vaquero that somebody obviously had worked over the trigger and had opened up the chamber throats. It’s a .45 Colt/.45ACP convertible and I thought I should really concentrate on it.
It shoots everything into under 3 inches at 25. This is a typical group with the 270SAA bullet over 8 gr of Unique.

It shoots everything from 6 gr of 231 under a 250 gr RNL to a bunch of bullets over 8 gr of Unique to the same group.
It even shoots 230 gr ball in a nice tight group in the same place.

Re: Makes you wonder. Revolver discussion
So why don’t I just file that front sight down a bit and maybe take a hair off the right side of the blade. And then trade in every single one of my other “outdoor” revolvers?

BTW this 270SAA is an outstanding bullet. Fills the chambers perfectly.

Re: Makes you wonder. Revolver discussion
Scott. that is good news! i have had 6 of the older Vaqueros & was not pleased with any of them
So i have the Alaskan in 454 that does real well with any thing i stuff in it, a bud of mine just got a 45 in new Vaquero
he loves the way it shoots, so with the two reports i hear about the gun i may have to try one
i cant remember ever seeing one around here, gun show in a month oooh no!

Looks like it shoots pretty well. Those 270 grain bullets look good in there. My guess is that penetration is great.

Re: Makes you wonder. Revolver discussion
I passed up one like that last year, but I do have the Lipsey's 45 convertible Flattop. Like yours, I couldn't really find a load it didn't get along with and it was a favorite for traipsing the canyons for a while. These mid-frame Rugers seem to be consistently the best SA's they've made in years.
It appears that you've really got it in for that cactus!

Re: Makes you wonder. Revolver discussion
My Blackhawk convertible is plenty accurate for my needs. .45ACP is accurate out of it.

Yes, I’m carrying a tiny 9. I suppose my manhood should be questioned at this point.Catshooter wrote: ↑Sun Apr 02, 2023 9:32 pm All those great big bores you've shown us over the years and you're carrying a 9? A 9???

Re: Makes you wonder. Revolver discussion
I don't know about that. I have a similar collection of big bore revolvers, and as much as I'd like to pack one everyday, just isn't going to work. I have the same little Sig that goes with me just about every day. If it's not the Sig, it's an even smaller S&W 442.
The work I do, ya just can't go packing a large handgun. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Re: Makes you wonder. Revolver discussion
Been wanting one of those new model Vaqueros for a long time but haven`t got one yet, i have a old model i bought when they came out and is so accurate i hate to change.
As for a carry gun i use a XDS.
If i want a smaller size SAA id use my Colt 44 SP.

I also have a love for big bores, and have a number of .45 Colt, and .45ACP handguns. But when it comes to carry guns I have a compact 9mm and a full sized S&W 59 in 9mm. And as JimT mentioned, I also carry a Walther .22LR on occasion that fits neatly into the pocket of any pants I'm wearing.

I bought a lot of dope armed with only a High Standard derringer in .22 Magnum. It was plenty.

Re: Makes you wonder. Revolver discussion
The convertibles are sure a lot of fun. Took 7 months or so, but my .45 ACP cylinder for an Uberti Cattleman Sabre came in. Off to the gunsmith to be probably fitted. Very accurate when I got it back. Lots of fun and very versatile. Biggest thing for me is the flexibility to shoot factory .45 ACP's, which are again pretty readily available and the prices have been coming down. Saves my rare-as-hen's-teeth large pistol primers for stuff like .45 Colt.

Re: Makes you wonder. Revolver discussion
Just to clarify. I only bought dope in the performance of my job as a police officer. Never touched the stuff in my personal life. I have plenty of trouble without that kind of trouble.Scott Tschirhart wrote: ↑Mon Apr 03, 2023 12:22 pm I bought a lot of dope armed with only a High Standard derringer in .22 Magnum. It was plenty.
Re: Makes you wonder. Revolver discussion
No worries here, I think most understood the context. And yes, life has enough naturally occurring drama without going looking for it.
Re: Makes you wonder. Revolver discussion
Scott, what are your thoughts today about the High Standard Derringers? Back in 1970 - 72 I drove an ambulance in town and in befriending a number of officers I found that quite a few carried the High Standards as backup guns. Most others carried Chiefs Specials, Star PDs, Walthers or Mauser HScs. A few years ago I decided I needed a .22 mag High Standard but I never found one in reasonable shape. They're sure flat but they're also surprisingly heavy for their size.

Scott, I am reasonable sure everyone, at least all the regulars here, knew exactly what you meant without the further explanation! BTW, my "always with me regardless of what I'm wearing" is a Davis D-38 derringer. had the trigger and hammer pull reduced to something I could do one-handed and discreetly. At table-length/bad-breath distance it will certainly do the trick.

Re: Makes you wonder. Revolver discussion
I carried one for years in my back pocket with a leather pocket holster. Quite safe in that you had to want to pull the trigger to make it go off. It was reliable and simple and it shot to the sights. However the ammo created a pretty impressive flash and report in those days!Walt wrote: ↑Wed Apr 05, 2023 5:34 pm Scott, what are your thoughts today about the High Standard Derringers? I love big bore revolvers and lever guns.
But I find smaller guns awfully useful at times. My most carried gun lately is a beat up used SiG 365 that I bought cheap. My most used levergun is probably my beat up Winchester 9422M that I also bought cheap because it was well weathered.
Re: Makes you wonder. Revolver discussion
I think Winchester 9422s are some of the finest rifles they ever made. I have one in .22 lr and another in .22 mag with Winchester's laminated stock. Beautiful guns!

Re: Makes you wonder. Revolver discussion
I filed the front sight just a hair and thumped it sideways with a brass hammer. I shot it today and I am awfully close to calling it good. One more range session is in order before I do anything.
