Adjusting Front Sights
My google-foo must be lacking, 'cause I sure can't find what I'm looking for. I seem to recall seeing a tool that could be used for adjusting sights in a dovetail. ISTR that it was a screw type device that held the barrel and pushed against the sight.

Re: Adjusting Front Sights
Yea Griff……..it’s a tool that grips the barrel and keeps the push bar at a 90….but heck, you and I be rednecks and a block of wood with a brass punch does just as well…….I’m surprised an old head like you would even ask a question like that…….….I also consider that tool for novices….
Yea, common sense prevails here…….with a screwed on ramp or a $1.98 solder job I’ll cut out a piece of wood with a wood chisel that supports EVERYTHING while I’m hammering away with a brass punch and a 10oz ball peen hammer…you know the deal bro…..a little heat helps…….
Really, no b.s….Over the years I must have knocked out at least a thousand dovetailed sights……..

Optics Planet has a huge selection.

I have never found one that works on larger diameter barrels. Seems they're all for medium to lightweight barrels and wont center on larger barrels.

Re: Adjusting Front Sights
Thanks all... Sixgun's right... a brass dowel and a ball peen have worked well for years... I just thought there might be something that would be a bit more "precise". For what I've got pictured in my noggin, I can probably make it... Hopefully, it won't be one of those "hold my beer and watch this" moments!

You don't need a hammer for this self- driving brass drift. https://www.wyomingsightdrifter.com/

Re: Adjusting Front Sights
Those work OK, but it's tough to judge how far to pull it back to get a certain amount of movement. You might pull it back, and not see any movement when released, or pull it back and get too much, and have to try to hit it from the other side and hope it doesn't move too far.765x53 wrote: ↑Fri Mar 24, 2023 3:27 pm You don't need a hammer for this self- driving brass drift. https://www.wyomingsightdrifter.com/
I watched a guy with a brand new one show us how it worked, and the first time he hit the sight it shot out of the dovetail, and luckily got found in the grass. I kept using my punch and brass hammer.

Re: Adjusting Front Sights
Do what I do, get yourself a section of brass brazing rod, mark the barrel with a lead pencil and tap until you're sighted in. Before I got the brass brazing rod I used to use the rim of a 30/30 DUMMY cartridge to drift the sight. Hope that helps. YMMV

A set of inexpensive brass punches is under $10, and they work great for many things around your gun bench. Something anyone who shoots, reloads, or does occasional maintenance should always have. Amazon and Ebay have lots of these sets.
