Every Wed. and Sunday afternoon my wife goes over to our oldest granddaughter's house so they can spend time together. And when this happens I always seem to find things to do that I know I can't get away with when she's here! That's because whatever I do is usually indoors in the basement and my wife wont like the smell, noise, or both!
So today I had everything ready when she headed to her car to fire form cases for my .40-50SS! I had 50 cases primed, and charged with 5.5 grs. of Unique, and filled with amaranth seed, with a wax plug over the mouth. Laid a folded up rag on the floor to catch the charge, and muffle the sound, and quickly fired off the 50 cases. The rag keeps the burnt powder smell down also, and of course catches the seed filler that's burnt.|
Once I got them all formed I set my case trimmer for 1.96" and using my power trimmer ran them all down to length. Then I deburred the case mouths and ran them each through my Lyman M die .410" expander. So once I reprime them, they're ready to load with my 350 gr. bullet and powder charge. They are only about 95% firmed once fired, but after their first firing with bullets they'll be completely formed.
The .40-50SS is one of my favorite cartridges to shoot, and easier to form than any other case I make from donor brass. And in my 34" heavy octagon barreled Rolling Block it's also extremely accurate, and extremely mild to shoot. Much like the feel of a .38-55 in the same rifle.

I'm a lucky guy. When we had our house built 26 years ago the plans we drew up included a workshop between 2 attached two-car garages. Nothing that I do in the shop can be heard in the house. It's my escape and my favorite place.

I have an attached garage, and also another one car detached shop. But both have my hotrods in them, so really can't do much with guns out there. Besides the fact the unattached shop doesn't control much sound, and I live in the city! I do love my basement gun room because the temps vary little all year around, and it's dry also. But being downstairs does mean I occasionally need to wait to make any larger noise, or use things that might let the odors drift upstairs.

Have you ever sent out pictures of your hot rods? I'd love to see them.

I did post pics of my '39 Chev when I finished it last year, but don't think I've posted any of my '37 Austin sedan? I'll PM you a couple pictures rather than clutter up this good site with car stuff.
