One can again hunt in Illinois with a levergun...
... so long as you remove the magazine spring and follower.
I think I'll leave my '73 be.
The funny thing is a '73 can function as a repeater without the spring and follower, although that would certainly violate the "spirit" of the new law.

What can the reason possibly be? So it doesn't reload? Ohio has struggled with rifle hunting for ever and still are not logical about their rules.

Reason? What does reason have to do with anything in a state run by Democrats!
Illinois long limited firearm hunting to shotguns firing slugs or to muzzleloaders using BP or similar propellents. The idea was to keep high velocity ammunition out of the hunting fields. I guess they figured bullets could go skipping from farms and forests all the way to downtown Chicago.
Then, wanting to get more hunters in the fields, they opened to handguns. Bottleneck cases were limited in length to 1.4 inches, but apparently they saw no need to limit the length of straight wall cases, probably figuring that in a handgun they couldn't be much longer anyway.
This year, they opened the season to single shot rifles. They kept the same cartridge limitations as for the handgun, but failed to see this now means you can hunt with a 458 Win Mag firing 300 gr X bullets at 2800 fps. So much for low velocity arms
Realizing not many people own single shots these days, the bureaucrats decided repeaters could be used so long as they are crippled such that you can't feed from a magazine if present. They suggest for a lever action that removing the magazine spring and follower gets you a passing grade. As I mentioned, the 60/66/73/76 family can work as a repeater sans those parts.
Regarding handguns, they have to have at least a 4" barrel. Thus, a 4" derringer chambered in 30 Carbine (one of the blessed cartridges) is legal for deer, but a 3-1/2" 44 Mag is not. The bureaucrats don't include the cylinder length in the "barrel."
Like I said, this place is run by Democrats.

These folks must be smoking the same really bad dope that Oregon Fish And Wildlife rule-makers are.
"No, of course we can't allow the use of high-powered adult airguns on upland game the way California does, because we can't hear the sound and calculate the harvest." I swear to God. Must be nasty ditch weed sprayed with Paraquat.

Plus one.
It seems that those who make the gun laws have very low velocity brains.

Maybe they think that if the bears are still up & about that late, they're up to no good and need to be shot!GunnyMack wrote: ↑Fri Dec 30, 2022 5:58 amTheir brains are ballistic gel!gamekeeper wrote: ↑Fri Dec 30, 2022 3:45 amPlus one.

They are awake most of the winter and its a 6 day season usually, cant do too much population control in 4 counties in 6 days..Griff wrote: ↑Fri Dec 30, 2022 9:45 amMaybe they think that if the bears are still up & about that late, they're up to no good and need to be shot!GunnyMack wrote: ↑Fri Dec 30, 2022 5:58 amTheir brains are ballistic gel!gamekeeper wrote: ↑Fri Dec 30, 2022 3:45 amPlus one.
