A new Gold Standard (in operatic singing)
.
I've always been more of a Skynyrd and Beck and Trower and Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull person, but I appreciate pretty much any genre of music that conveys intensity, including some opera.
Pavarotti's Nessun Dorma brings tears to my eyes, but recently I stumbled across Lara Fabian (...I wish... )
Listen to her sing Caruso (there is a brief intro before the song) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28CMa1aOXuU
Then listen to the Gold Standard - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8A61eY1Efg
Maybe it's just my 'gender bias' ( I do think Lara is much more attractive than Luciano ), but it seems to me that she has set a Platinum Standard, at least on that song.
Lots of her other stuff is incredible, too - she sings in several languages including English, fluently, but I like the Italian ones best (even though I only vaguely understand lyrics other than English) - the emotion is so clearly conveyed you don't need to understand the words (some words like 'whiskey' are universal, and the throat-slitting gesture kind of helps pass along the meaning ).

I think she's my new girlfriend.

Absolutely wonderful.
(You knew there was a but coming )
It's just like having a black guy play Matt Dillon.....no matter how well he plays the part it loses something.
In the opera, that's a man's part sang by a tenor.

...then again I like Adele's version of Lovesong WAY better than the original Robert Smith (The Cure), or popular Nick Hexum (311), so maybe I'm musically gender fluid...
...or maybe I am just a sucker for a beautiful woman no matter what she's singing. I guess I'm stereotyping, but to me it seems like female vocalists tend to put more feeling into their music, at least when it's expressing happiness or sadness, and males do a better job with their vocalization when they are singing about power and anger. On the other hand I'm glad Pavarotti never tried to do Metallica covers, and that as far as I know Janis Joplin never sang One Less Bell to Answer...

Very nice Doc!
If you like great music performed by an easy-on-the-eyes lass -- then you need to listen/watch Lola Astanova.
Lola Astanova performs "Children" by Robert Miles
Take 2 of her videos every morning to start the day -- it's better than vitamins (or Viagra!).

I do, Ray. She's a year and a month older than I am ... in other words, OLD!
Re: A new Gold Standard (in operatic singing)
I'm quite sure that I'm several years your junior yet I still remember when those willowy, bow-legged chicas with the unmanageable doos held much appeal. Almost everywhere you went (nightlife social venues) in the '80s there were always couples consisting of a vertically challenged dweeb escorting a reedy babe who towered over him. And ah ! that big hair of those days. My old lady.....er, I mean, beloved bride of 11,790 days cannot understand why I don't want her to get a radical cut in the summertime.Bill in Oregon wrote: ↑Sun Dec 04, 2022 8:41 am I do, Ray. Re: A new Gold Standard (in operatic singing)
Yepper, I well remember that trio of musically performing objects of puppylust crushes in that era......linda r., olivia n-j., and stevie n.....Mind, i wast just a wee perv. of eight when that original performance first aired. Once you matured past the actresses portraying marsha brady and laura ingalls those three were the logically obvious choices. Forgot one.....did marie osmond count ?
Somewheres along about that time we were all mobbed together at grammer's for thanksgiving when someone exclaimed, "linda ronstadt is on hee haw and she isn't wearing a bra !" The herd rush from the kitchen-dining area to the telly den literally upset that little 1100 sq. ft. mill village bungalow's foundation.

Notice the actual question she asks in the lyrics..... the answer being untold millions and millions of times in the figurative, fourth dimensional sense.

Linda Ronstadt was not only a hottie but a righteous young lady, from what I've read. Now she is old like us...... and has Parkinson's disease... Lived a fantastic and successful life though...!
