Cast Slug
I got a mold a few years back from a friend on castboolits . He had it cut for an LC Smith 10 gauge that had lopped off barrels and was .775” as it dropped from the mold . To tight for any of my 10 gauge guns , but once I got an 8 gauge I thought I could make it work . And the last few days I’ve been messing with the slug with masking tape wraps . It serves a dual purpose . Firstly to tighten the slug in the choke and secondly to cut down on lead scuffs/smears in the bore . Monday I loaded 6 slugs with four wraps of tape and pushed with International Clays . Also used the same charge etc for six .795” roundballs with three wraps of tape . Strangely enough the slugs and roundballs are pretty much the same weight right around 730 grains or 1 5/8 ounces . I hope to try both on paper at about thirty yards tommorrow . With this stuff I shoot two or three from the right barrel on a target then two or three from the left target on another target . In the past I’d used Universal Clays but I find myself without so I’m trying International Clays and see how it does .

Re: Cast Slug
This is the Parker DH 8 gauge I’ll shoot them in , I’ve liquidated my other three Parker 8’s as this one seems to fit me and what I do with the gun the best of the four .

Re: Cast Slug
See how the day goes tommorrow I need to cast enough 000000 buck to load twenty or so shells . That’s 200 round balls and I’ve got two four cavity molds , so twenty five pours in both molds oughtta giterdon with room to spare !

Re: Cast Slug
That's one big hunk o lead!
Me thinks you are going to try and make some venison with the 8, wonder when the last time a Parker 8 was used to shoot a deer?
I've been playing with 20 ga hand loaded slugs, the BP Thug slug. I've tried 800x, Universal Clays, Longshot , Herco and PB. The PB has shot the best so far, of course an obsolete powder! I've only shot these to 50 out of my Savage 220, it's crazy accurate with Remington Acutip 3". But at $24.00 a box of 5 if I can find them I was looking for something else...
How many pieces of 000000 can you get in the 8?

Re: Cast Slug
I to have a Savage 220 and I shot the same slug but the 2 3/4” version . Sadly I’ve not used the gun in over five years ! It’s main reason for existence at my house was to take it to the Blackwater NWR in Dorchester Maryland in hopes of potting a Sika deer or two .

Re: Cast Slug
Here’s a pattern I shot with handloaded buckshot and the loads written on the target . I also cast slugs for the 20 with a Lyman sabot slug mold , the thing looks like an air rifle pellet on steroids . I only shoot those in smoothbore doubles but have decent performance inside my parameters .

Re: Cast Slug
The Lyman type sabot slug can be obtained from a number of sources in every gauge from the 10 to the 28 as well as the 410 bore . I’ve got a mold for all except the 410 .

Re: Cast Slug
I’d rather not answer the initial question for fear of incriminating myself LOL’s ! I do have a friend in MS that’s knocked a few over with punkin balls from Parker 8’s . Also have a lawyer friend that hunts in GA and SC that was sitting stand on a few deer drives this year with his Parker 8 loaded with 0000 buckshot I loaded for him . As to the amount of 000000 buck , when I loaded the first with a WIN hull and folded crimp and an SP-8 wad I was getting 8 pellets . When I changed a bit to a REM hull , the Gualandi was and a rolled crimp I was able to get ten pellets in each hull .

Re: Cast Slug
Got a Mossberg 410 and would like to get one of those slug molds. Any idea who sells them? TIA
Re: Cast Slug
Go on EBay and search shotgun slug mold . I just did and couldn’t find anything but 12 gauge . There were two Russian and or Ukrainian companies cutting molds . I got molds from them for the 10 , 16 and 28 gauges . But they did offer for the 410 . Here’s a link for one of the 12 gauge molds https://www.ebay.com/itm/255524294254?h ... BMkIXQmZBh

Re: Cast Slug
Shot the punkin balls first two from the right barrel on one target and two from the left on another target . They didn’t show me enough to warrant a picture ! Then I did the same with the .775” 730 grain slug . Right then left .
Think I can work with it in the right barrel .You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Re: Cast Slug
Also got my pot fired up today and cast 500 of the 000000 buck and about 35 .795” punkin balls .

Re: Cast Slug
That 2buck load looks very promising! What distance?
I have a fair pile of those Lyman 12 sabot slugs, no I take that back, not the Lyman's but the 'drive key ' Foster style.
After all these years of deer hunting with slugs I've left the 12 for buckshot only and use my Savage for slugs. When the 220 hit the market THE slug to shoot was the Remington 3" Acutip. That's all I've ever shot out of it and it's been the most accurate slug gun I've ever experienced, 1 hole groups are the norm if the jerk behind the trigger does his part!

I have a nef 20 ga I would like to find a slug for, one that could replace the shot in the wad, like a .69 in a 12 ga shot cup.
Do you know offhand what the inside diameter of that is, of what size round ball would fit into it? Thanks!

Re: Cast Slug
I.D. of which Grizz, my Savage 220 bore? The thug slug o.d. ? Not so easy for bore but the Thug Slug is .620, its approximately. 850 tall, 1.695 oal with attached wad.
I'd try a .620 rb in your bore. I dont have any rbs large enough to slug my bore. You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Re: Cast Slug
thanks! in 12 ga a 0.69 roundball can replace the shot of a shotshell, fitting into the shot cup like a sabot. i'm wondering about about putting a RB or mini ball type slug in a 20 ga birdshot hull.GunnyMack wrote: ↑Thu Nov 17, 2022 6:28 pm I.D. of which Grizz, my Savage 220 bore? Re: Cast Slug
The Lyman type sabot that look like an oversize air gun pellet that 6pt mentioned are for use in regular wads. I've shot some just for kicks and they work well. Bench rest accuracy, no but minute of deer certainly. Here where I am fish & game does not allow 'pumpkin balls ' out of shotguns but yet a round ball from muzzle loader is legal . Typical gubbermint ...

Re: Cast Slug
No I'd think not unless you are shooting them under the bird feeder, by the dozen!
