Sights, etc.

Post by marlinman93 »

I took both of my two recent acquisitions to my friend who does a small gunsmithing business in his home shop. They've been there a couple weeks, and he called yesterday to tell me the Sharps 1874 and my Darr Rolling Block were both done.
Neither rifle had ever been D&T for a tang sight, and since both had been reworked I didn't hesitate to have holes drilled in the top tangs to add better sights. The Darr Roller also had never had barrel sights, so I had Gordy also cut a 3/8" front dovetail for a globe sight too. And I discovered the Roller had never been finished as it had never had an extractor fitted to it! So I gave Gordy a correct extractor for .43 Spanish, so he could build one for the .35-40 from it.
Both rifles now have Soule tang sights, and globe front sights. The Roller has a Lee Shaver Soule, and a Lyman globe front sight. The Sharps got a Sharps Sporting long range Borchardt tang sight with internal rack and pinion style elevation adjustment. The front sight dovetail threw me a curve as I forgot these were an oddball width! I discovered it was .452" width, and in all my globe sights I only had one this size; an old #17 Lyman globe that has the dual apertures that are peep, and pin head post. You push one down, and the other pops up, so changing from peep to post is quickly done. But only one size of peep, so hope it works OK.
Sorry for th bad pictures, my camera was acting up.

Nice!

Mr. Shaver's sights are a piece of art all by themselves. Really like the one on my '85. I need to order another for my phoney sharps infantry rifle. Very accurate shooter, but those sights are tough to see.

The Freund sights that came on my Sharps were horrible, and I think even good young eyes would have trouble shooting accurately. I had to stop with load workup using those sights, as I couldn't legitimately know if it was me, or my loads that caused big groups. Hoping these new sights will give a much better sight picture that I can maybe get better groups with.
