Front barrl band question

Post by M92nut »

I am going to chop down my 20" Stainless .357 Rossi. I noticed that the octogon barrel rifles have a different way of attaching the magazine tube to the barrl and was wondering what would I need to install the same set-up on a round barrel that has been cut down to 16 inches. Thanks

A mill and a really good tape measure. That "mortis" is curved front & rear as the magazine ring rotates ino & out of it. Not something any competent gunsmith shouldn't be able to do. Except in a TD model it's placent isn't real critical. There is also a hole on the underside of the barrel for the magazine end cap screw to also go. It requires an "end drill" for a flat bottomed hole as I don't believe its threaded, just a smooth round portion of the shank of the screw goes in it; if it's like mine.

You could do away with it also. If you notch your mag tube behind the forend cap tenon and drill a hole thru the tenon to intersect the notch, it and the mag plug screw should be enough to hold the tube in place. You wouldn't even need that if you go with a "button" mag.

Is your gun a carbine or a rifle?

Isnt it amazing how many people post without reading the thread?

It is the carbine I believe with the 20" barrel. After reading the posts by you guys , I wonder now what options some board members here have done in removing the front barrel band entirely while retaining a full lengh mag tube on a round barrel. I wonder if someone has tapped the underside of the barrel and fastened in some way the mag tube to it? I am sure someone here has killed some brain cells and come up with a band replacment option! :D

If you aren't too concerned with historical correctness you could just use a marlin mag hanger and plug. I did just that for a feller that sent me a Browning 53 with the short mag converted to a full length mag.

If you mind me asking Nate what was involved in modifying that Marlin part to install on the Rossi. Aslo did the Marlin part from Brownells? Thanks

You will need to cut a dovetail on the bottom of the barrel for the hanger and drill/modify the tube to fit the hanger/plug combo. The parts can be had from Brownell. You will need the 1894CB parts, not the carbine.

Once again-thanks for the technical info that you offer all of us on this forum Nate, I appreciate it. BTW- The Rossi video that I bought from you a while back was great info.
