Anyone into the model 1876?
I find myself wanting to add at least one of each model Winchester. Modern reproductions are fine for me as I intend to use them.
Took my Uberti 1876 Centennial in 45-60 out for this evenings deer hunt. I think Uberti does a fine job with these rifles. I did have to work out some accuracy issues for mine but now she shoots pretty darn respectable. I use AA5744 pushing 300gr PC cast at a leasurely 1400fps give or take a little.
I'd like to get another 1876 Centennial in 50-95 at some point.

Whatever you do always give 100%........... unless you are donating blood.
Re: Anyone into the model 1876?
I'm in to it but at this time a stripped 1883 receiver is all I have. This is planned as a basis for a true custom rifle.
I had planned to make most every piece of this rifle .
Just waiting for its turn on the list.
I had originally planned on color case action but I may just leave the dark patina a build off that.

I've done the same thing.RIDERED350r wrote: ↑Sat Nov 05, 2022 5:57 pm I find myself wanting to add at least one of each model Winchester. Modern reproductions are fine for me as I intend to use them.
Before the horrendous boating accident, I had reproductions of the Henry 1860 (Uberti), Winchester 1866 (Uberti), Winchester 1873 (Uberti), Winchester 1876 (Chapparal Arms), Winchester 1886 (Browning), Winchester 1892 (original and Rossi), Winchester 1894 (original) and Winchester 1895 (original). I wish my 1876 repro was an Uberti (or original, of course), but I got it for a song, so I can't complain.

I think you'd be better served with a 350 gr. bullet, 300 is light for the caliber. 1400fps will zip through most anything on this continent, no sense beating up you your shoulder, or the gun. My 76's are 45/75 and 50-95, looking at a 45/60.RIDERED350r wrote: ↑Sat Nov 05, 2022 5:57 pm I find myself wanting to add at least one of each model Winchester. My 45-60s are very easy to shoot. I followed the guidance in an article about the modern Uberti 1876 and didn't exceed any data listed there. The load should be very safe for the rifle. As I worked up groups tightened up.
I may be interested in trying some 350gr at some point. I do enjoy playing with these old cartridges.
Re: Anyone into the model 1876?
Probably most all us would like to have in possession every old Winchester Lever, me for sure! But I've never been a collector, from my youth, I always bought only what I want to use, just me! I've studied these old guns for years, all Winchesters especially, but 99% by reading.
To me, the 76 is one the most interesting, because I'd use it, and only wanted it in 45-60! Mainly I guess from watching and reading about Tom Horn!
The only Mod 86 I'd want is one in 33wcf, and maybe in 35wcf, either those two, I would use!
Next is what I already have, had to have and I have two Mod 94, both in 30-30, but my favorite is the same action but in rifle form, the Mod 64. But I'd sure like one in especially 38-55 and second the 375 BB.
The most interesting of the Win Levers, IMO, is the Mod 71 in 348! To me, nothing like it, but we all know it's really an 86, but to me, perfected!
And the Mod 95, but I'd only want it in 40-72, Townsend Whelens favorite, before the Bolt Action.
But to my way thinking, the 76 is really what got the BB Levers rolling, that enabled a man with a rifle to go anywhere, kill any game, whether for food or survival!
Even if it had to shortest and least popular life and use, it's still, the daddy of the BB's, and beautiful to look at!

I currently own a pre-safety 94BB in 375 Win and love it.

Re: Anyone into the model 1876?
I have an original 1876, in 45-75, that’s just a joy to shoot. Heavy 26” Octagon with long range sight and set trigger. It’s a 3 digit serial number, produced in 76, shipped 77, and spent its first few years riding the Oregon trail for protection. It came to my family just before WWII. Passed down to me. Pristine condition, but I only shoot light loads out of it now.

Re: Anyone into the model 1876?
My levergun collection started as a teen in the 70's, always wanted one of every caliber of the 94's. That was before the internet, and before a good paying job. Interests change as one grows older, the most 94's I ever had was 6 different calibers. never had an interest in the 95s, but got just about every other main model of the the Winchesters, be it Winchesters or copies. The 76's are currently at the top of my interests these day's.

Re: Anyone into the model 1876?
Throw me in on the list too. Bought my 1876 in 2014. It is a Chaparral in 45/60 with 28" barrel. It did have a few minor issues but nothing that I could not handle myself, and end up with perfect rifle. I have only shot smokeless in it so far. It is easy shooting with the heavy 28" barrel and 292 original Winchester bullet. Not my go to rifle for shooting for fun, mainly because of having to making enough brass for finished shells.
Pat C,
As Veeman stated, go over to CAS City for help from several people who have done the exact same project or just made specific parts. I am over there on that site, also.
Bearskinner,
That is a beautiful looking rifle and great history behind it. Thanks for sharing.

One day I need to find an original 1893 barrel for this take down. Somewhere around the beginning of WWII, the rusty barrel was replaced with a model 36 ( pre 336 ) barrel.

Watching "Hombre," in which the protagonist puts a '76 of unknown caliber to good use several times.

That's not a 76, but rather a cut down heavy barreled 73.

Re: Anyone into the model 1876?
Hey veeman! The 1876 (4th one from the left) in your pic is really unique looking. Please elaborate on it! It has a carbine look about it due to its shortness and carbine rounded buttplate, but yet it resembles a short rifle with the short mag tube. What is that particular model called and who makes it?
There's a video on youtube by "The Adventure Cowboy" I believe he's called. He had one very similar looking to yours but it was a special run called the Presidio model.

Re: Anyone into the model 1876?
That one is the Texas Ranger Presidio, 50/95. 20" barrel, made by Uberti. packs a wallop on both ends with a full case of BP! Just scored another Ubert 76 in 45/60, a short rifle with 22" barrel.

Re: Anyone into the model 1876?
My 1876 is a Taylors made by Uberti in .45-60. I bought it because it has exceptionally nice figure in the stock. I originally mounted a Marble's tang sight, but it now wears an MVA vernier tang sight. I too load a 300 grain cast lead bullet ahead of a charge of 5744 powder for about 1,400 fps. Last time I shot a Lever Action Silhouette match with it, I scored 29/40 which is an AAA Class score.

Well, better late than never!
Here's my Chapparrel (sp?) before that horrendous boating accident:
And just to prove it is really me
I added the Lyman tang sight and front target sight. Otherwise, it is stock.
Anyone know of a current source for .45-60 WCF brass, marked as such, that won't cost an arm and a leg?

All water-logged. I imagine it is rusting away at the bottom of that lake.
Re: Anyone into the model 1876?
Whatever happened to Chaparrel brand name ?
Re: Anyone into the model 1876?
From what I read their parts were mostly interchangeable with originals. I need to figure out the direction I'm going on my receiver. Really hoping to make all the major parts myself . Might get Winchester barrels to make barrel and use a Gunville stocks. Pick up a few original parts too.
Thought about making it 50-95 express with heavy barrel .
Got so many other projects going not sure when I will get to it.

There's four things that stop me from doing projects like that: time, money, proper equipment & knowledge! But, I sure love seeing what others can accomplish. I look forward to seeing it done!Pat C wrote: ↑Sun Dec 04, 2022 10:19 amFrom what I read their parts were mostly interchangeable with originals.

Re: Anyone into the model 1876?
Over the years I have purchased a few 1876 Winchesters that had been cut-down , stripped or otherwise abused in some way , only to spend more bringing it back to original configuration than one not damaged and in the same condition would have cost me . It would have been cheaper and easier / smarter to just purchase one like I ended up with . ( Remember in some cases these 1876 Winchesters bring more broken down and sold as parts , than it would bring as a whole rifle ) . The reason I did it and still do on occasion is the satisfaction of helping save the few remaining 1876 Winchester rifles that are still in existence . I surely don't do it for the money as I have collected these old Winchesters for over three decades and have never sold one . So why the rant ? Well in ( my opinion ) rebuilding one is a very pleasing hobby , although purchasing one already in good condition is money much better spent than rebuilding .

Re: Anyone into the model 1876?
I hope to acquire an original one day. I'm glad someone out there is getting otherwise defunct old rifles back into useable condition. With the newest 1876 being over 120 years old, any of them are worth it to me.

This is the first Ive heard of the 76 Uberti being made as a 22" short rifle. I find no reference to them on Uberti, Cimarrron or Taylors sites. From whence did it come?
I shot an original round barrel 45-75 that was cut down to 22", it felt just right. The 28" barrel doesnt interest me, nor do the long wood carbines, but the 22" short rifle is the sweet spot to me for looks and handling, and 45-60 would be simplest to make brass for and keep shooting.

Re: Anyone into the model 1876?
It came to me by way of Gunbroker. The seller did not know if it was cut down from factory or if Cimarron did it. I have read that Cimarron had taken a few rifles and had their in house smith shorten the barrels. A friend from the 76 community had one in 45/75 that was a Cimarron cut down. I have that barrel now and intend to put it on my 45/75, as mine has the Uberti chamber. Nothing wrong with it, I just want the normal chamber and the short barrel. This one is really handy, eager to get out and shoot it soon. My 76 Presidio in 50/95 has a 20" barrel with the button mag, pretty handy as well.
