I`ve tried a bunch of different kinds of char lighters and most just aggravate me, so came up with my own model that works first time every time and ya can carry extra flints in the bottom where the cotton used to be.
Ya can store it right in your char can, any zippo type lighter will work just remove the cotton and wick from the lighter.

I made another one using a new Zippo that works better yet, first pic shows the hole plugged where the wick was and second pic. shows JB weld put in the bottom to plug hole.
Now extra char could be stored there.

Thanks Grizz, i made a couple fire pistons and they don`t seem very reliable and tried flint with out much luck.
I know it`s not a traditional way of doing it but it does work if your into starting a fire with char.
If anyone makes one let me know how it works for you.

" ... lighter fluid evaporating in their pocket." Reminds me of my freshman year in college -- 1971 if anyone is counting -- when took up smoking cigarettes and started carrying a Zippo. It took a while before it dawned on me that the painful rash I had on my upper right thigh was caused by lighter fluid.
Lenn, that's a swell idea. Are you using cotton or linen for your charcloth?
Yep i remember those days
Cut up squares of blue jean for the char Bill.
Thanks.
