Levergun dreaming...

Post by Ysabel Kid »

I think we've hashed this question out before, but I'll dare to post it again - with a different twist. We've gone through the "what is the best levergun?" debate, and we've seen the "if money wasn't an object, which levergun would you get?" question. How about this one:

"If money wasn't an object, what would the levergun you had custom-made look like?"

Specifics guns - such as:

Caliber
Barrel length
Stock type (straight or pistol-grip)
Finish
Action (Winchester, Marlin, etc. - or something new and exotic?)
Magazine capacity
Sights
And any other details

Just doing a little levergun dreaming. Since money IS an object (for me anyway), I figured I might as well share the dream!

And oh, I'm still trying to think of mine. Hoping that you guys give me some neat ideas! :D

I would have a custom made Winchester 1894 chambered for the .45 Colt.
It would be an exact duplicate of the turn of the century SRC, complete with machined barrel bands, full length magazine, flip up ladder sight, pinned in front sight blade, carbine but plate with trapdoor, checkered hammer and all the correct markings.
The chamber would be SAAMI minimum unlike those made by the factories now, with the barrel being lazer gauged to .451".
Trigger pull would be a nice crisp 2.5 pounds. The stock and forearm would be a nice well figured black walnut with the old tyme Winchester reddish stain on it.

Ysabel, nice idea for a post. Joe, interesting dream gun you have. I guess mine would be having Mic McPherson build me his 510 Kokiak Express on a modern Miroku/Browning High Grade 1886. A shotgun buttstock/premium pad, dual mercury reducers, NP3 the parts to slick it up, throughbolt conversion on the buttstock, bed the forearm, modify the loading gate for easier operation and apertures mounted into the underside of the buttstock to go with a Williams rear receiver sight and a typical Mic trigger that breaks at 2 1/2 lbs. I'm still considering it and Mic is interested in building it! :D

it would have to be win 92 with pistol grip ,shot-gun butpad,22" octagon bbl
half mag tube, in 445 super-mag necked down ackley style to 375. to shoot
220 gr bullets at @ 2400 fps.
a vnotch rear and brass bead up front. with tang site back-up.
in deep blue with color-case hardened accents like skeletonized grip-cap
forearm tip ,hammer, trigger, sights, mag cap button and loading-gate.
and checkering like the win feather-weights had.
in plain straight grained walnut.

YK, nice post. I will have to wait a few more months for mine to arrive before I could post pics but for now, the levergun I am dreaming of is the .357 stainless that NKJ is working on for me. 3/4 loop, bead blast two tone, steel mag follower, action job, receiver rear sight. After that it would have to be an 1886 high grade SRC mirouku but in take down, Silver receiver with custom gold engraving, action job, ivory front sight. (45-70 of course)

Simple. A stainless Winchester 1886 takedown with .50 cal and 45/70 octagonal barrels. (can the receiver and bolt handle that?) Can have different twist rates for different days. A smooth bore for shot. Straight grip. D&T for bolt peep AND tang vernier sight. Front sight dovetailed into barrel flat. Various stainless mag tube lengths for combo diversity. I'm salivating already...

Caliber: .308 Winchester or maybe 7/08
Barrel length: 20 inches
Stock type (straight or pistol-grip): Straight - Black/Grey Laminate w/nice recoil pad.
Finish: High Gloss Black - Gary Reeder
Action (Winchester, Marlin, etc. - or something new and exotic?): Browning.
Magazine capacity: How ever many it could hold in a full length tube.
Sights: XO Ring/Post with Scout mount and QD Scope.
And any other details: I'd go back to original design of the Browning when they started trying to make the BLR, with a tube. I'd load soft gummy bullets, perferrable 125gr - 180gr but would be happy with faltnose.

Closest anyone came was the 307 Winchester which will push a 130gr bullet 2850fps out of my 20 inch barrel. The 150grs will run @ 2650fps.

Caliber: 45-90
Stock type (straight or pistol-grip): Straight - Presentation grade Turkish walnut
Bbl: Douglas air gauged 24" tapered octagon
Finish: Case hardened frame, hammer, lever, shotgun plate and forend cap. High polish blue everything else.
Action (Winchester, Marlin, etc. - or something new and exotic?): Wincheseter
Magazine capacity: Full length tube.
Sights: Full buck horn rear with ladder. Front small copper bead. Long range tang sight.
And any other details: I'd like the receiver engraved in Rudolph Kornbrath style. I'd like it built by Doug Turnbull's shop.

How about a Winchester 95 takedown with 4 barrels, pistol grip (cuz I like em), matching high grade stocks
(can you say burl?), oil finish, rust blued and CCH. The ultimate "one gun" levergun in my opinion.
25-06, 26 inch slim round barrel
30-06, 24 inch 1/2 octagon barrel
35 Whelan, 24 inch tapered octagon barrel
405, 24 inch straight octagon barrel

If I could afford to get it made I would go for a Ruger 96 in .22 Hornet, 20" barrel, with a steel receiver and walnut stock.
I would also like this rifle in 32/20 but I don't know if a magazine would too expensive to design.

It may not be the best lookin' custom gun but it sure would be useful to me.

If money were NO object - I'd get a custom-made 500 S&W levergun. The 'reason' would be that if .45 is better than .44, .50 has to be even better! Plus, it is easier to find .50 sabots for when lead bullets are outlawed (then I'd shoot brass, copper, or steel, or pea gravel for that matter).

I really like the Marlin 1894 action better than the Winchester/Puma 1892 overall, but I know it couldn't handle the diameter or pressure. Not as sure about the 1892, but since it might be a stretch, if money were REALLY no object, I'd get someone to do an investment casting of a scaled-up receiver and go from there. I'd want them to make several so I could 'proof test' one until it cracked and then hopefully have a high comfort level with it (and maybe so I could sell some, if I got all the ATF/manufacturer permits and stuff).

Even without a very hot load, that big .50 bowling ball heading downrange would be effective on most any game.

Heck, maybe I'd get a longer action made up for a longer version of the same round, as well, in case any Cape Buffalo wandered into Indiana.

If I just had to buy a stock levergun, and price wasn't an object, I'd either get another 1894SS (a duplicate - how boring), or maybe a MarlinXLR in 35 Remington (just 'because').

I noted several have take downs with multiple caliber. Is all you have to change on a takedown is the barrel in order to shoot different calibers. my ignorance speaking here. thanks

As long as the cartridge family (case head) is the same and you don't go violating OAL I think that is the case ... with the Winchester style takedown on the Browning designs. In Griff's post, the 30-30, 25-35, 32-40, and 38-55 all share the parent case head I believe. Another example would be the 348 Win, 50-110, 450 Alaskan all sharing a case head and OAL limit.

I think you can still get into trouble where the carrier may need some massaging on some combinations. But it's doable.
