New shooting bench

Post by GunnyMack »

Our hunting club has never had a REAL bench.
This morning I hit Lowe's for a bunch of lumber and put together a nice size bench, 3' x 4'. I decide to make it with a 7° incline , easier to bag up a rifle and promote better posture- preventing recoil to collar bone!
I also made the seat able to slide fore & aft so shooters can get 'just right ' . The seat assembly will also allow a tote with sand bags to stay on site, it amazes me what I've seen these guys do to sight in!

Oh and I also included half round cut- outs so you can stand up to 14 guns .

I'm not a BIG guy, the previous bench wouldn't let a teenager shoot comfortably! This design was off the cuff, but as most things I do, a pencil sketch and I make it up as I go ! Was hoping to christen it tomorrow but it looks like rain.

I have high hopes this will be very comfortable to shoot from.

Thanks Jay, 40-82 !

I found a design on the net about eight to ten years ago that has built in seat on both sides for right or left with the part in the middle for rest/bags . I prefer sitting where my torso is 90 degrees from the target backer .

The first of those benches I had constructed I had the main posts left long enough so we set them about a foot in the ground . Which was a good idea so they wouldn’t get drug all over the place . And I’ll be d..a..m..n..e..d if someone of the idiots in our club didn’t try and pull them up out the ground !!!!!!! Luckily for them I wasn’t there to see them trying to pull them up . Think they got two or three of them about halfway out and musta run out of energy

First class all the way. Looks like a fun bench. Room for all the stuff that seems to show up on them.

I like that plan you show 6pt, ill have to file that away in my memory bank.

Yes a bench with lots of real estate is a must!

I bet those guys trying to move that bench would have been funny to watch!

Looks good. 7 degree incline is not much, but it should be enough to help with recoil angle.

Bear in mind they were sunk about a foot in the ground and tamped around the legs . I hope the boobs got a hernia or at the very least pulled muscles .

Now that's the way to show gumption, Gunny. I like that design, too --totally ambidextrous. 8)

That's what the Sportsmen's Range on Ft Lewis uses.
Thing is, the person sitting on the other bench will throw off your shot any time he moves whatsoever.
I have no idea why the Range Officer puts two people on one of those.

The design as far as I’m concerned is not for dual use at once .
