CO2 handguner again.

Post by gamekeeper »

My son and his wife came down to stay for a few days, they are busy making arrangements to live in NZ so I have acquired all his surplus ammo etc. and my old Benjamin .20 pistol, he said it had stopped holding CO2. Well I dropped some silicon oil down where the gas seal is and put in a new gas cylinder and it's spitting out lead just like I remember... :D

Now that's a lovey little popper. I've found with the single shot CO2 pistols the most common repairs seem to be merely lubrication or replacing the seal because it was over tightened. In fact, with the 2240's around here, I've replaced the seal at the front of the valve probably 10 times more than any other repair. Folks just crank that cap down like crazy and squish the seal all out of shape. I just ordered a dozen of those seals to keep on hand.

I'm not sure which model that is. But you can access manuals/exploded parts drawings for the Benjamin/Sheridan pistols from this link:

Thanks Paul, I assume by what you say replacing the seals is fairly straightforward. It is quite powerful and despite a hard trigger not too bad in the accuracy department.

On the later Crosman guns (2240, 1740, 2400KT, 2300T, etc) it's a breeze. What model is yours? I'm not sure if it uses the same basic valve as the later pistols or not. If it is, then it's no problem to replace. Extra cool factor for the .20 caliber!

Further digging yields the probability that you've got an E20 or EB20 pistol, link to manual/EVP below

https://support.crosman.com/hc/en-us/ar ... 1991-2008-

I'm now VERY curious. It does look a bit more involved than the later 2240 et al system. But should be doable. I'm not sure what seals where in the diagram, but you can call Crosman's customer support and ask if they have "X" part number in stock. Knibbs and others my have parts for it there in the UK. Again, I've not looked. It's a good thing yours is holding gas and shooting, beats having to fettle them first.

Thanks for the link Paul I have never dabbled with these CO2 pistols, more used to Webleys, I have just tried it again after a few hours and it's still shooting with a lot of power, I didn't keep count of the shots but I must put about 15 through it this morning so it should be good for another 15 or so now.
Got to get some more of those pesky greenhouse gas capsules now.......

.
I was at Rural King today and spotted this for $49.95...

https://hardairmagazine.com/reviews/rug ... st-review/

It's a breakopen, not a CO2 gun, but this thread spurred my interest and I bought it.

Although my first few shots were hampered by the target being stolen and run off with before I could start shooting...

...eventually I got some shots on paper. I have to say accuracy was disappointing but the light was terrible and I was having to shoo the dogs away the whole time, which didn't contribute much towards focusing. It certainly seems the sights are going to need adjusted.

Still, I had never had a pellet pistol before and figured it might be some fun. If it proves to be one I can shoot accurately with eventually, so much the better. If not, at least I'll get a feel for whether it would be worth purchasing a better one down the road.

Besides, it's a Ruger and it looks cool.... :D

Adjusted the sights and it hits to point of aim now.

Needs trigger smoothing and lightening, but I understand that's not too difficult.

Need to try different pellets to see what it likes.

Just wanted a really cheap plinker. No CO2 to run out of and have to buy. Not powerful and probably won't be super accurate, but some days I just want to shoot SOMETHING, and if it is quiet and inexpensive so much the better.

Now I'd love a Ruger 22LR with integrally suppressed 8-10" barrel, for similar reasons, but that would see me back about thirty times as much and we are entering some national as well as personal lean times.

It will be a fun little diversion (...same thing I thought when I met my wife 315 dog-years ago... :o ).
