Re: speaking of .22 penetration
Haven't done any water jug penetration testing. Wish the article had tested my go to .22 LR ammo for handguns. CCI Velocitors function in all semi autos that I've tried and don't stick in revolver charge holes. Haven't chroned them but indicated velocity 1435 fps w/40gr HP (from rifle) is better than most LR ammo.

.
Carried them in my 317 Lady Smith when I had my hip replacement (only "pocket carry" gun I had that I could keep the elastic waist band shorts from falling off)
.

.
Recently bought a Bersa Thunder - The Velocitors are 100 % reliable in the Bersa. Haven't had as much fun with a new gun in a long time. Not a target gun and like all "little" guns can be a bit of a challenge to shoot. It does however require concentration, proper trigger control and follow thru discipline. Only a range/fun gun at this point, but would have no problems as a carry piece if needed.

Gotta love 22s
One of Paco's articles on this website mentioned knee capping a drug perp using 22 mag derringer with good results.

Re: speaking of .22 penetration
In a time before money, I got a S&W 317, the little >2" barrel, not the kit gun. Mainly because I could afford to shoot it a lot, and I did....thousands and thousands of times.
With eight shots of Stinger ammo, I was reasonably sure that four or five in the torso would produce the desired result if I were to be attacked.
This thing had the worst double action trigger pull EVER, probably in the area of 12 lbs or more. But, at close self-defense range, I could empty it into a torso-sized target in a little over a second.
Now that .380 is available again, I should practice with my LCP much more, but it's a vicious little beast to shoot usually drawing blood on my trigger finger from the snappy recoil.

Re: speaking of .22 penetration
Many moons ago there was a crippled deer hanging around, probably hit by a car. I tried to relieve its agony during the late bow season but couldn't get it to cooperate ( tried to be legal about it) Finally during a snow storm on Christmas eve I saw it in the yard. I opened a window and put a CCI 40gr std vel through its rib cage, about 40 yard shot. It centered a rib, both lungs and it stopped under the off side hide. If itll go through a deer it'll go through a human. 1st choice- not by a long shot !

President Reagan was nearly killed by a .22 lr, and he didn't even know it at the time. It can kill, but it would not be my first choice. If I had to use a .22 lr, I would want it to be accurate and easy to use. 6 or 8 well placed fast shots should get the other guy's attention. I am not certain they would slow him down quickly, but well placed bullets might cause a lot of damage. The throat has a lot of blood going through it. Discovering that you are bleeding a lot usually causes you to stop for a quick check for the cause.

Re: speaking of .22 penetration
one of the videos on youtube had someone penetration testing .22lr at 400 yards. went right through a package of beef. forget who that was.
it seems to be commonplace on u2b
https://duckduckgo.com/?q=22+long+rifle ... &ia=videos
and from page there is this: https://youtu.be/pvB3DY4k_8M
most interesting to me. but if i were using a 22 i'd be shooting someone in the face, not the 2x10.

Years ago in one of the alphabet agencies, the women who carried .22's were taught to shoot into the sinus cavities ... multiple times.
