The wife and I are planning a trip to San Antonio for our anniversary. What restaurants and tourist type stuff would you gentlemen recommend.

Thanks for all the tips. It sounds like a lot to cram into a three day weekend but we'll do our best. We moved near Conroe, TX last year from Oklahoma City and are just barely starting to scratch to surface on what Texas has to offer.
86er, thanks for the offers! Were not sure when we are going yet. We both have hectic schedules and the wife just got served for jury duty. I'll shoot you a note when we figure it out.

If you like history, take a trip on the mission trail - not simply the Alamo but all of the Spanish missions. The San Antonio zoo is also a good trip - not as big as San Diego but good nonetheless. The Botanical Gardens are also something to see and of course every tourist is sent to the Riverwalk, which is in the heart of the city. Red McCombs is a big car dealer and has a large gun collection is several of his buildings off 281. They are office buildings but worth checking out just for the view. You might also visit the McNay Art Museum and the Witte Museum - both are local landmarks and the McNay is nationally recognized for its collection.
There are simply no limits on food recommendations and there are many fine places to visit. Obviously, Mexican food is near the top of the list but some of the best food is found in the small Mom and Pop taquerias and not in the big restaurants. You can hit La Fogata or Mi Tierra for good standard Tex-Mex and not be disappointed but there are thousands of "hole-in-the-walls" that make outstanding meals. There are also a lot of steak houses (Morton's is good but a bit pricey) but The Barn Door at 8400 N. New Braunfels gets my vote for best value. If you drive out of town, try Clear Springs in New Braunfels (about 30 miles north of downtown SA) which has the best fried catfish you will every eat - (I guarantee).

I like the Longhorn Saloon for the taxidermy museum and cowboy museum. If you are on the Riverwalk, Coyote Ugly has good food. You know your wife best so see if she minds that type of atmosphere (hourly dancing on the bar - not x-rated though). Otherwise eat on their outside patio. You can ask for Rosie to be your hostess, she accomodates our tour groups all the time, a very nice polite kid. Come tour our ranch in Hondo, only 29 miles away from the City limits! Just give me a call and I'll arrange to meet you. Of course the Alamo is there and the range that the Nationals are held at (shotgun sports). If you're going to take the Riverwalk boat tour I can hook you up with the most seasoned tour guides. When will you be in SA?
Don't forget the Quadrangle at Fort Sam Houston, where Geronimo was held. Then there is the Roosevelt Oak where Teddy signed up his troops for their Caribbean tour. The Insitute of Texas Cultures could give you a good overview of the area's history. Don't know about access right now to the Military Medical Museum at Fort Sam or the Taj Mahal at Randolph AFB (WWII's West Point of the Air). We have the historic King William area and its Blue Star art complex. When you leave the zoo, don't miss the Japanese Tea Gardens right next door. If water parks are your thing, the biggest one one in America, Schlitterbaun, is 30 miles up the road in New Braunfels. We also have the regular tourist fare with Six Flags Fiesta Texas and Sea World. The Gulf Coast is only 150 miles away. Despite being 150 miles down the road, do not schedule a border trip to Mexico. Things are very different these days.
These are the places I would recommend anyone going to see in San Antonio.
1) Alamo. Even though it looks nothing like it did during the time of Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie, there is just something about that place. It dang near makes me tear up every time I go. There's so much history there.
2) Buckhorn Saloon. I think 86er mistakenly called it the Longhorn Saloon, because it sounds like the same place. It has a really cool 1800's type saloon and restaraunt in the front, and a pretty neat museum and taxidermy collection in back. That costs, but it's well worth it.
3) Menger Hotel. Some pretty neat history there as well.
4) Mi Tierras.
5) Riverwalk. I'm not as impressed with the Riverwalk as some people are. To me it just looks like a big drainage ditch running through town, but it's got every kind of eatin' place you could ask for.

I have various discounts for Sea World if you are interested. They range from "buy one day get on free" to "adults at kids price" to "buy one get one free".
I vote for seeing Rosie at Coyote Ugly . Very nice young lady . I cant' go to the Alamo without getting chills when I walk in, does something to me every time. Lots of places to eat, or just set and people watch, along the River walk. Just outside of the Zoo is the Japanese Sunken Garden, or something like that, that makes for a nice walk. There is no reason to be bored in San Antonio.
