Winchester 1873 lever question?

With the lever at rest position the lever should be just below the frame(lever not high enough to disengage the out of battery safety?). is this correct? I the lever is too high it allows the out of battery safety to be engaged or the hammer to fall, correct?

In a word, Yes. It's called a trigger block safety.

I've aquire one that the lever jusst lays against the bottom of the grip frame was wondering which spring to look at first to see why this is happening. Amy heop would be greatly appreciated can't seem to find working prints for this on the web.?

That would be the lever return spring. IIRC, it's adjusted by the little screw on the left side on the bottom of the frame. It could also be a bent lever or links, which will seriously affect headspace.

There is a cam pinned to the lever shelf on left side,this is what lever spring rides against. The last little bit before lever closes the spring tension is felt. This resistance is what pushes the safety catch up so the trigger can be pulled.
T hats how the safety works ,when lever is open the trigger can not be pulled.

The safety catch also has a spring that forces it down when lever is open.

These springs are all machined from solid ,repels can be had at Homestead parts. Original also are not hard to find.
