Anyone Taking TUMERIC as a Daily Supplement?

Post by Old No7 »

My wife has been dealing with some pain in her knee and while she waits two+ months for an appointment with a Sports/Ortho specialist, one of the doctors she works for has suggested that she starts taking TUMERIC as a daily supplement.

The Doc rattled off a whole list of the health benefits of this yellow Indian spice, so we looked a little deeper into it this weekend. Tumeric been used in India for thousands of years as a spice and medicinal herb, and modern science is starting to prove there are indeed some medicinal qualities to it.

But since it all sounds "too good to be true" (see list below)...

--> I'd be interested to know if anyone here has been taking this supplement and really believes that there are some benefits ? ! ? !

Below I've listed some info found online about this spice/supplement.

10 Proven Health Benefits of Turmeric (and Curcumin)

Medical science has started to back up what Indians have known for a long time — Tumeric contains compounds with medicinal properties. These compounds are called curcuminoids, the most important of which is curcumin. Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric. It has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant. However, the curcumin content of turmeric is not that high. It’s around 3%, by weight; most of the studies on this herb are using turmeric extracts that contain mostly curcumin itself, with dosages usually exceeding 1 gram per day. It would be very difficult to reach these levels just using the turmeric spice in your foods. Therefore, if you want to experience the full effects, you need to take a supplement that contains significant amounts of curcumin. Unfortunately, curcumin is poorly absorbed into the bloodstream. It helps to consume black pepper with it, which contains piperine, a natural substance that enhances the absorption of curcumin by 2,000%. (The best curcumin supplements contain piperine, substantially increasing their effectiveness.)

The reported benefits are:
1. Turmeric Contains Bioactive Compounds With Powerful Medicinal Properties
2. Curcumin Is a Natural Anti-Inflammatory Compound
3. Turmeric Dramatically Increases the Antioxidant Capacity of the Body
4. Curcumin Boosts Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor, Linked to Improved Brain Function and a Lower Risk of Brain Diseases
5. Curcumin Should Lower Your Risk of Heart Disease
6. Turmeric Can Help Prevent (And Perhaps Even Treat) Cancer
7. Curcumin May Be Useful in Preventing and Treating Alzheimer's Disease
8. Arthritis Patients Respond Very Well to Curcumin Supplements
9. Studies Show That Curcumin Has Incredible Benefits Against Depression
10. Curcumin May Help Delay Aging and Fight Age-Related Chronic Diseases

For awhile I was putting it on anything that could use the flavor..to me, it's a mustard flavor. I used it with black pepper per instructions. Maybe it did help, but I didn't notice it.
The two things that do give me great relief is the white-colored extra strength Tiger Balm and rub it in with a little DMSO, or rubbing alcohol. I doubt it heals anything, but boy howdy it sure is a great relief. I'd recommend using those gloves that you can get in a box of 100 for about 8 bucks.... (I still use the tumeric and black pepper liberally on food...love the taste, and, like chicken soup, couldn't hurt)

I'm a big fan but quit taking Tumeric as it thins my blood too much (daily aspirin the same) contributing to trouble with nose bleeds. Thin linings in my nose of course the main problem any blood thinners compounding the issue. Least that's what I've been told. Correct me if I'm wrong Doc.

My wife has us on a number of supplements. Checked with her about this and she said she doesn't add it to our daily supplements, however - she adds it into many dishes she makes.

I started taking a combination of Turmeric/Curcumin/Biopirene several months ago. After beginning the current regimen it sort of "dawned on me" that while I haven't changed my activity level... it's been that long since I felt the need to grab any NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs i.e.: Ibuprofen, Naproxen, etc. ) for pain or inflammation relief. Before I began taking this combination, A day at the range, yardwork, long motorcycle rides, would have me eating some NSAIDs on a routine basis.
I mentioned it to my Doc at the last checkup and he said some of his staff have reported similar results. He didn't delve into specifics, didn't make a recommendation of dosage, product choice or anything...just said if it helps...good for you, keep it up. I have not identified any negative issues so far.

* * Bringing back an OLD posting back to the top in the hopes it helps someone else. * *

I'd just posted this info on a posting by Pitchy ("Got the wood done"), after seeing all the work he did with that LARGE wood pile...

For a natural inflammation remedy, I've been having great success with Tumeric Curcumin (an Indian spice) that has BioPerine in it -- which helps with the absorption. The one we get is made in the USA, and is from Amazon (Nature's Nutrition brand). Since taking this daily supplement, I no longer have to wear wrists braces every night, or especially after working my wrists really hard on the weekend. They used to ache "for days" after a weekend workout, and now I barely have any soreness.

This stuff works!!!

I've taken it daily for at least 5-6 years, I believe in it! It don't stop my pain & stiffness, but nothing will. I have a lot of joint problems, pain, especially hip, knee, shoulders. But I will continue to take it, I need it!

Methylsulfonylmethane, also known as MSM, is another one that's good for joint pain. A friend of mine that had arthritis real bad swore by it. You can probably find it in pet stores, especially those dealing with large animals. I'd suggest taking gelatin with it also since it helps replace cartlidge in joints. HTH

Didn't notice the original post date at first. Yep, a "blast from the past".

Anyway, my wife's been using it along with a concoction of other stuff. IIRC she mixes it with a bit of apple cider vinegar for good measure and drinks it first thing in the morning. She didn't do this while we were up north earlier this year, but got right back on it when we returned - because it's been working quite well for her. I'll toss it into various concoctions on the stove along with other spices, but she takes it daily.

On the other hand, some folks are allergic to it. My brother breaks out if he eats it.

As always, your mileage may vary.

I've got one bad wrist with 90% disability, and two bad knees, one of which has been operated on 4 times now. I tried tumeric for a long time to see if it might help, but honestly didn't get any relief from taking it, so I stopped. I know others who swear by it, so maybe it's just not working for me.

Tiger Balm is great. Have you ever tried JaMong? It is a green paste balm made in Thailand. It goes on hot like Ben Gay or horse liniment, then in about five minutes it turns cold like ice with a menthol feel. As a 64 year old guy who does 10 rounds of Thai Boxing several times a week, this keeps me limber and pain free.
