44 300 XTP

Post by mickbr »

Fellas anyone run this at revolver and/or carbine speeds? its a heavy bullet, wondered if its more for 444 marlin speed or performs okay in the 44mag as well. Im assuming 1500-1600fps is doable from a 44 carbine.

I shoot this bullet from my CVA muzzle loader using a sabot cup. Excellent performance for deer sized animals. The hollow tip design causes very rapid expansion as observed by wide wound channels within the chest cavity. This heavy weight is ideal for 100% penetration and heavy blood trail. I have never recovered a bullet. - TR

Don't know if this applies!
I shoot a 300 gr. hard cast over a pile of 2400 out of my marlin with a 24" tube and a skosh over 1700 fps! About 1300 fps out of a Redhawk with 7.5 barrel, same load.

My experience with XTP bullets has been good. They hold up to carbine velocity out of a Ruger semiautomatic carbine over a near max load of H110 and a WLP primer. Load recipe is in the Hornady 9th Edition on page 836. I get better accuracy with 240 grain bullets, but not a lot better. 50 yards and the 300 grain bullets are all within the 10 ring. No dead animal is going to complain that the group at 100 yards was about 3 1/2 inches.

I get 1450-1500 fps out of 22" bbls on my double.
I haven't tried the 300 gr in a revolver or my '92, yet.

The 300 gr are hard to find right now.

It was my understanding that the 300 gr XTP was designed as a pistol bullet, but I'd think it would hold up with a carbine 44 mag just fine.
