OT - New pistol from S&W

Post by jkbrea »

I saw a "new" revolver S&W put out. It's a .357 called the M&P TRR8.
Basically it's a 8 shot .357 with a light rail and a rail for a small eotech or pistol scope. It has good reviews but I like my older S&W revolvers. Might make a good LE handgun. It carries as much as a Sig 220 or standard 1911 but in .357, although many departments don't allow magnum loads. It a little too pricey, $900- $1300. I'm not good at pictures so maybe someone else can put it up.

That just about describes my thoughts on it too.

I don't know. I kind of like the looks of it, but I wouldn't be hanging a bunch of goofy accessories on it either. I won't be buying one at that price though.

I got rid of my Python and bought a Model 28 and have never regretted it.

I've looked at the TR8, but with the exception of the outstanding trigger and 8-shot capacity it's not on my list.

You're not too retro, yours is a classic and a beauty. But I like the idea of 8 rounds in the chamber. That would be a pretty good woods walking gun where you can carry open.

It would be a good game gun with the 185g hardcast.

It would be even better if they 'centennialized' it. And made a fixed rear sight. Nothing sillier than an adjustable rear sight on that type of gun.

Revolver and 6 or 5 rounds seems a natural to me. Blued steel is a natural. Which way the cylinder spins doesn't matter. Been through the rubber grip phase.

Okay, I'll chime in here. I'm a semi-auto pistolero, this I know in my heart, though I have learned to appreciate the elegance of a well crafted revolver.
In a nutshell, I like it. I like the chunky flat surfaces on the barrel, I like the color, and I like that it has eight shots in the cylinder. I do wonder why it has such a big gap in front of it, and if this is some new way they're trying to seal the gasses.
For revolvers, I'm a fan of Ruger in many forms. I own one revolver, a Ruger Super Redhawk, and I've come to know my wife's Blackhawk in .357, which has an elegance all it's own.
This thing is not elegant. But it is built in useful proportions, and seems to have practicality at it's base. Practicality is a form all it's own for me, and so I say "I like it".
I'm still not buying one, though.

Seems to me the gun manufacturers are at or near their end. They keep coming out with short runs of weird guns. Anything to get the 2% of the shooters who buy guns to buy guns. Make sense?---------Sixgun

Well, I have to admit - I kinda like it. But I like my older revolvers a lot too. Here's one of my favorites - S&W 44 Special 3":

And one of my older ones - Colt 1917 45ACP:

NYC asked for something similar for the front guy on the tactical entry teams... seems the slide on an auto pistol would thump the sheild the guy carries.

I know someone who has one. Been back to S&w 3 times now. That aside I can't say I'm too impressed by it.

(Sure as heck wouldn't give up one of my SIG P220's for it. They carry 9 rounds to start and 10 on the reload. )

I love a nice revolver, but the roony-ness of that particular model sets my teeth on edge. I'll stick with the ones I have:

Only 7 shots, but only $600 and it's stainless.

That's a urban myth/sterotype. If you want to hit something, you have to aim and adjustable sights are more useful in making a gun accurate.

There, it dosen't seem so silly now does it? :D 8)

I think you misunderstand me. The bluing on the new revolver is not a blue I like. I like the traditional deep blue. And I detest rubber grips on anything. Wood properly prepared for the intended job is my preference. As for spin it really doesn't matter as long as the bullets come out the right end!

I'm with sixgun; things are coming to a sorry pass throughout the industry. Perhaps if they took a page from the REAL gunmakers of the last century and offered real options and custom features on standard models, they''d sell more product
overall. One can only wish ...

Please don't tell my S&W M10 that. I shot these during load testing standing unsupported. Last week I filled out a survey that S&W E-mailed me for purchasing my M10. When done I also sent them an E-mail explaining how their new products are lacking considerably. Now I know that the intrernal lock is pretty much here to stay, I don't like it but it is a fact. However they do need to get rid of all the bells and whistles they keep putting on these revolvers, and overhaul their QC Dept. When I took my brand spanking new M10 home guess what I found? .... 3 of the 5 lands were missing at the crown of the muzzle. Ever since the 2 piece barrel concept came about, I here of more and more folks having to send the gun back to have the barrel nut re tightened. Then there is the issue of these great alloy frames. Go do some reading over at the S&W forum, you will find quite a few threads of folks who have had to send their alloy frame guns back due to the frame cracking (these are on new revolvers).

With the prices that S&W is making us pay for their products these QC issues are outrageous. I won't be buying anymore revolvers from S&W until they start coming out with what the consumer wants (more steel framed one piece barrel revolvers), and the QC issues are fixed.

I'm an old fogie. I don't like the flat-sided barrels, rails for whatever, internal locks in addition to the proven standard parts, or cylinders with those weird numbers of chambers. The finish isn't so bad and the rubber is a thing that might or might not be needed. I abhor the fiber optic sights (can't see them). MIM parts can be ok. Still, I find myself more and more drawn to the older guns. I get them for prices very competitive with new guns and they work just as well and yet, they have soul the new guns seem to lack. And I'm only 53...

Sights have a place, but not on that one or any other carry piece. Big sights with lots of edges catch on stuff. I don't want my gravestone to read: Couldn't get it out of where it was hidden

As an old foof (turned 69 last week), I would point out that I don't "fear" change. I just don't like it, especially when it comes to firearms. The industry flourished for more than a hundred years by offering a solid line of high quality products. The gun men have lost out to the accountants, and we are much the poorer for that.
