358 win
Anyone use this calibre fellas? Wondering if there is there a real difference in power over 308 or is it more of an armchair ballistics increase. I was thinking the ability to use heavy pistol bullets like 158gn or 180xtp in a pinch would be useful too- for those who may have a lot on hand
Re: 358 win
Here's a couple comparisons ..(from an article I did on the 348 WCF)

Re: 358 win
Read Paco's article about it on this website. You will be impressed! I've used it on deer and hogs. There is an obvious increase in power over the 308.

Both 338 Fed and 358 Win are a substantial bump over 308. 358 Win REALLY takes advantage of bullet design yo make big holes in critters

Re: 358 win
I have often thought that the .358 should be more popular than it is. Especially since it will fit in short actions.
A Savage 99 in the Brush Gun configuration would be something that you could use on anything in North America.

I am a big bore nut. I have a 338,358,348,2-35 Whelens,45-70and 44's. In my opinion the BLR 358 will kill stuff out to 200-250 as good as any. I traded a 308 BLR off for my 358 BLR.....Joe
Re: 358 win
the .356 Win isn't a bad choice either

Re: 358 win
I'm working on a 358 load with AR Comp and the Hornady 250 grain JSP that I should be able to get 2300 fps out of a 20 inch barrel in my BLR. That's pretty darn stout!

The LGS has a Savage 99 in 358 but they're asking $1600.

They don't have photos up but it's a 99F.
From their used guns page...
Savage 99F Classic lever action in .358Win. Blue receiver hardwood stock. Brass cartridge counter. 1600.00
It was still there yesterday.

Re: 358 win
The 356 Win is one my favorite whitetail cartridges. The 308 is a great all around whitetail cartridge that is hard to beat, but the 356 with the 200 grainers seems to anchor them better. The 35 Rem with 200 grainers knocks deer down but is limited on range. Before all the gun prices went nuts with BLM protests. I was looking for a good used Marlin 30-30 to send to JES for the conversion to 356 so I wouldn't have to drag the 94 BB through the woods. But instead I have been looking for a Savage 99 in 308 project to rebarrel to 358. I come across 99's in 300 savage at fair prices but not the 308's. The 99's in 358 that I have been seeing are in that $1500 range. Like Joe says a BLR in 358 is hard to beat.
Re: 358 win
I have a takedown BLR in 358 winchester and it kills all out of proportion to its size. Never had an animal hit with it go more than 20 yards. I bought it after having a much too close encounter with a 450 lb wild boar. I have shot it at targets out to 300 yards where it holds 4-5 inch groups. The big plus is you don’t need premium bullets with this round as cup and core do a great job in this caliber.

Re: 358 win
Look at what Elmer Keith said near the bottom. I can say in all honesty that personally? If I was 20 years younger, good eyes, I would've done got me a BLR in 358. Liked one over, great sights, beautiful smooth rifle, and box mag!

Re: 358 win
The big problem with the 358 is traditionally few guns have been chambered for it from the factory. If you want 35 cal. the big one as far as guns go is the 35 whelen. You have the 7400 and bar, 7600, blr, bolt guns and my bet is there was a ruger #1 too.Scott Tschirhart wrote: ↑Thu Mar 24, 2022 9:25 am I have often thought that the .358 should be more popular than it is. Re: 358 win
Ruger also made a limited run of Hawkeye bolt rifles in 358.
Re: 358 win
I got a 358 bbl for my Encore last summer and had time to play around with it before deer season. I can’t believe it’s not way more popular than it is. They probably should have called it something like a 358 Mag or something. I’m in my seventies and I’ve been deer hunting for sixty years. I knew nothing about this cartridge until someone I met on line started telling me about it. I ordered the barrel from SSK and it’s turned out to be the most accurate barrel I own for my Encore. I’m getting sub 1 moa groups at 100 yards for five shots. My last three groups were .4,.4, and .8”. I’ve owned varmint guns that didn’t shoot that good. I fired three shots and got four deer with it last season. Nothing went further than twenty yards before piling up. I’m thinking about getting a bolt gun in .308 and having JES bore it out to .358. I called him and it’s not all that expensive to get it done.
Re: 358 win
Thanks fellas. Would anyone have old manuals with reduced power loads. Most online sources are full power 200-250 grains. I was hoping to also get some data for a few other loads levels being.
Reduced rifle powders
2400 powder
Bullseye/clays speed of sound loads.
Anything that powers a 125-158gn pistol bullet in particular.

Re: 358 win
I shoot 200g and 180g out of my barrel. Check this out for reduced loads.
