"Old" Colt SAA 44-40 to go with Winchester lever.

Post by rangerider7 »

Funny how things happen. I went to the San Antonio Gun Show this weekend and traded for this 1906 Colt SAA. It is in great mechanical condition, all original, some bluing left and a little case hardening in hidden places. The screws don't look to have been turned. The stags are beautiful to me and fit like a glove. As you may know from a previous thread, I just bought a new Colt SAA 44-40 a couple of weeks ago to shoot with the lever. I plan on shooting this one but you can never tell, I might have to put it in a display case too. The 1st generations are getting tough to find in decent condition anymore. I saw so many messed with Colt SAAs this weekend.

My 1st generation Frontier Six Shooters get lots of use and look like it. Despite thousands of .44-40s run through them, they have NEVER broken or seen a gunsmith.

One of them has a nice set of initials engraved on the buttstrap, but I've never tried to have it authenticated in any way. I have no clue about the notches, either. I bought the gun for $40 back in '62 and it was exactly like it looks today.

Very nice. Great find. I would shoot it.

I never got to own a SAA before the Nanny State took our rights away.

I envy you guys and I go all shades of green when I read these posts.

Occasionally I come across the odd SAA in .44 rim fire which we can still own due to the ammo being obsolete but the last one I saw cost £2000 and was pretty beat up!

Thanks for posting rangerider she sure looks a beauty.

Mike D, I sure wish that pistol could talk.

It is a shame that the British "deciders" took away your ability to own antique Colts, Gamekeeper. I stopped looking at them some time ago, back when the prices got even more stupid than they are today. Some of the junkers that you see at local shows are an embarrassment to Sam'l Colt himself. The same goes for Winchesters. I don't understand the $3000 price tag on rust bucket clunkers, but everyone's got a gold mine, I suppose.

I wish that the engraved one could talk, too. It still speaks lead and flame OK, so I guess that'll have to suffice.

Rangerider7, you're killing me and my keyboard. You're a lucky man to keep coming across those old Colt SAA's and being able to pick them up.

Kimwcook, I have been lucky for the past few months. I have been trading quanity for quality, sometimes 3 for 1. It has been good for me through the last 42 years of collecting. I hope it stays that way. :D

GK - you really need to move over here! Of course, at the rate we're going, we're not too far behind.
