Winchester 1876 In 50 Express
I just picked up this original 1876 Winchester in 50 Express. These guns are rare and especially in this condition. I already have a Colt Lightning in 50 Express, so I don’t have to go searching for dies and components to shoot this rifle.
It came with Freund sights, both front and rear. Those sights are different than what you expect to see on these old Winchesters, but they do give you more sighting options.
I took it to the range and with those open sights, was able to shoot this 3 shot group at 100 yards.
Now I have to wait for gophers to come out to get some practice deer hunting next fall.

How Cool is that.I never saw a rear sight like that one..I can't see where there will be a problem with gophers unless one charges. .

Wow. Nice 76 Express.
I had a chance for a really nice one at Kittery Trading Post one time. I couldn't believe my eyes. It was a good price too.
I showed restraint and walked away. Mostly cause I had 2 kids in college at the time.
They better change my diapers when I'm old!

Great looking (and shooting) rifle. I would like to find an original 1876. The toggle link on my original 1873 has never failed me. I know the physics favor the more robust actions like on the 1886/1892/1894 models, but I love the looks of the 1873 and 1876.

Wow! Lovely rifle indeed! Looks like you're dialed in for deer, elk, bear, moose or whatever else comes down the pike. Are you sure, though, that the 50 Express is enough gun for gophers?

i have taken mine moose hunting a couple of times. moose are unreliable however, and both times the moose forgot the appointment. maybe next time.

Re: Winchester 1876 In 50 Express
That is true here too. I managed to shoot a moose with my 71 in 2009. I was more happy about using the 71 than the actual moose.

Moose hunting with a 76, I did it twice, got a moose with it once, still took a picture with the 45-75 even though I did get it with a 300 WBY. I used the 76 to show the difference in the sizes of the mooses.
This is the first moose I shot with a 76 in 40-60 Winchester
This one shows the difference in the size of the 2 moose with an 1876 in the antlers...

Re: Winchester 1876 In 50 Express
Nice find, very nice indeed! So far it looks like it will be a shooter. Enjoy it and be a good caretaker of it for the next generation of shooters/collectors.
The most important aspect of this signature line is that you don't realize it doesn't say anything significant until you are just about done reading it & then it is too late to stop reading it....

Re: Winchester 1876 In 50 Express
What are your thoughts on the usefulness of that Freund rear sight Shrapnel?
Re: Winchester 1876 In 50 Express
After shooting the rifle, I am anxious to hunt with it. The Freund sights add a simple dimension for easy and quick sight acquisition. I wouldn’t have thought I could shoot a 1 1/2 inch group at 100 yards with open sights, but those sights made it possible.
Re: Winchester 1876 In 50 Express
That 1876 is I, really fine condition .Wonderful rifle and by the sounds of it still gets the job done . Thanks for sharing this !
