I did some shooting today !
With both my 1892 32/20 and my 1895 30/40 Krag. Quite fun.
The 92 will need just a little sight drifting once I settle on a load, and it will shoot real well.
The 95 is realyy a great rifle. I am very suprised at the acuracy i got with both the 180 grain corlocket factory loads and the 180 grain sierra RN hand loads I squirted through her.
I would bet in the hands of an expert, or even me if it had a scope, it would rival many a modern bolt gun.
I got 3 into not much over a half an inch at 50 yards bench rested.
But the rifle was printing about 8 inches high at that range.
I stoped on the way home and got some 220 grain round nose hornady bullets, and already loaded 10, and they feed just great.
Bad as lookin load too.
I hope that alone will bring the point of impact down some, but I need
To be down quite a lot. I would like to be at 2.5 or 3inches high at 100, i am thinking to be able to shoot point blank out to say 150.
So I took a good long look at the front sight, and it is a siple pined in sight like on old 94s.
I was thinking a good way to go would be a tall front I could file down to find the right height and then install an ivory or gold bead at the proper heigth.
anybody ever done anything like this ?

tj3006,
Yes, I have regulated sights as you describe. Not on your exact sight type, but it works out the same.
For instance my Marlin 1894 Cowboy came with a .500" tall front sight with a HUGE bead on it. At 25 yards that bead obliterated most of the target and it was WAY to tall. So, after shooting a number of groups with the rear sight in various positions I did some calculations and decided that I needed a .359" tall front sight to put it where I wanted it. Lyman was the closese with a .360" tall sight and they had them with small beads. Now to have some built in adjustability I set the rear sight in the middle of it's adjustments and did the calculations from there.
Which leads me to your rifle. I'd set your rear sight at least two notches off the bottom. Very carefully shoot some groups from the bench to get a consistent group or two, then calculate how much front sight change you'll need from there. You might be able to find a replacement front sight from someone like Winchester Bob http://winchesterbob.com/ . There are quite a few places that have old Win parts and replica parts too. If I run across one I'll post it.

XS Sight Systems has a higher front sight for your M-1895, that they normally match up with their peep sets - but they will sell it separately, as I bought one for my .405 once upon a time.
They only make it in one style - a black post with a bold vertical white stripe up/down the center of the sighting face.
The part is: Winchester 95 Pinned Front Sight *1-Wl-0017-4-

Thanks for the hep guys !
Since my 95 is old I think the XS sight is probably not for me.
But winchester bob is clearly worth a phone call.
he doe,s not list any sights for a 95 but but I bet the ones for a 94 carbine would work fine on my 95 carbine.
I will have a look here in a minite and see if the holder is the same.

I did a guick look and the holder for the front site blade is quite different for the 2 rifles. (94 & 95)The basic design is the same but the dimmensions are different.
Also the thickness of the blade material is different.
But That is only a minor discouragement.
My next step will be to try the 220 grain hornady RN load and see how much and in what direction that changes things.
I also loaded 10 150 grain spire point hornady bullets in the off chance that the high impact point of the rounds I shot yesterday is the result of the relitivly slow moving bullet leaving the muzzle after recoil causes the muzzle rizes. The 150s should be moving arond 300 to 500 FPS faster than the 180s
And if that proves to be the answer I will be suprised . But it seems a posibility. And I bet If worse comes to worse, I can pull the blade from my 95 and send it to winchester bob and have him build a taller one.
