1920
Someone sent this to me. I have not verified its truth, but there are some oldtimers on here who probably can!
The year is 1920. Just over one hundred years ago
What a difference a century makes!
Here are some statistics for Year 1920:
The average life expectancy for men was 47 years.
Fuel for cars was sold in drug stores only.
Only 14 percent of homes had a bathtub.
Only 8 percent of homes had a telephone.
The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.
The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower.
The average US wage in 1919 was 22 cents per hour.
The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year.
A competent accountant could expect to earn $2,000 per year.
A dentist earned $2,500 per year.
A veterinarian between $1,500 and 4,000 per year.
And, a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.
More than 95 percent of all births took place at home.
Ninety percent of all Doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION! Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press AND in the government as "substandard."
Sugar cost four cents a pound.
Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen.
Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.
Most women washed their hair once a month and, used Borax or egg yolks for shampoo.
Canada passed a law prohibiting poor people from entering into their country for any reason.
The Five leading causes of death were:
1 Pneumonia and influenza
2 Tuberculosis
3 Diarrhea
4 Heart disease
5 Stroke
The American flag had 45 stars ...
The population of Las Vegas, Nevada was only 30.
Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented yet.
There was neither a Mother's Day nor Father's Day.
Two out of every 10 adults couldn't read or write and only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school.
Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were available over the counter at local drugstores. Back then pharmacists said: "Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach, bowels, and is a perfect guardian
of health!" (Shocking?)
Eighteen percent of households had at least one full-time servant or domestic help...
There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE U.S.A.

Re: 1920
Interesting. I would think a "current update" would be a true eye opener.

.
I'll bet the doctors had more common sense even though they didn't have as much academic education, and I'll bet the average voter had more common sense despite the lack of high school education.

Re: 1920
Mothers Day was established in 1914.
Gas stations were well established by 1920.
The Model T had been on the road for eleven years.
The 48 star flag became official in 1912.
I believe the year was more like 1900 or 1910.

Women were old maids at 19 or 20. Recreational shooting was unheard if for the most part. Wonder how I could have lasted back then for the long term. Todd/3leg
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Not buying too much of that.
Starting with with the life expectancy figure, consider that we were just coming off of the Spanish Flu pandemic, and WWI.

Re: 1920
They sure cut a lot of that poem out in the movie "Patton"!
Re: 1920
Those two looked to be off, so I checked. The murder rate appears to be low by a factor of about 30, and the US already had 48 states. I didn't check but am pretty sure the salary for a mechanical engineer is too high.

Re: 1920
Actually the life expectancy figure includes infant mortality rates. I often hear that way way back life expectancy was 35 years. Yes, but if you looked at life expectancy for those 2 years old and over you will see it was right around 70 years. 3 score and 10 like the Good Book tells us. My hunch is if you get the 1920 statistics and look at those 2 and over you will get a number right around 70 years. Modern medicine really gets the infant mortality rate down in developed countries.

Re: 1920
I don't doubt any of it, especially the life expectancy with infant mortality! My mom and dad both born in 20's. Mom had 2 little brothers to die before age of 2. Both raised in these SE KY coal camps. Moms house when she was raised was in head of the holler (hollow) and the creek ran under the house. Both died of pneumonia. I'm a 4th generation coal miner, raised same way, but by my times things where lot better.
By my time, it was very much like what you saw in the movie coal miners daughter. As matter fact, Loretta raised not to far from here, and the store where her & doo stopped and bought a bologna sandwich is about 15 minutes from here, and it still looks identical.
But the movie was very factual about the way of life! Many kids here never made it past 2 years back then. I worked 40 years underground, had to quit in 2016.
